Helping Him Choose: A Family’s Guide to Men’s Sober Living in North Miami Beach

For FamiliesSeptember 20263 min readBy The Foundry Sober Living

Most of the calls we take about the Lakehouse come from a mother, a wife or a sister, usually with a deadline attached — treatment ends Friday, the plane lands Tuesday. This is for you.

Three things to verify before anything else

One: certification. Florida certifies recovery residences through FARR, against the national standards from NARR. Ask for the certificate, check the operator's name on it. Two: supervision. Who manages the house, how many residents per manager, and who is physically in the building overnight. Three: the relapse policy, in writing, before he moves in. Same-day discharge with no plan is common in this market and it is dangerous, because tolerance falls during abstinence and the overdose risk immediately after a relapse is high.

What a sober living house is not

It is housing with structure, not treatment. Nobody there is providing medical care, managing a detox, or prescribing. If he needs those, he needs a licensed programme first — FindTreatment.gov lists what is licensed, and the SAMHSA helpline on 1-800-662-HELP is free and confidential, 24 hours. A good residence will tell you this itself rather than take your deposit.

What you will and will not be told

Ask at the outset what the house can share with you and what it cannot. Adults have privacy rights and a reputable house respects them, which means you may not get a weekly report on how he is doing. What you can reasonably expect is clarity about the rules, the money, and what the house will do in a crisis. Ask whether there is a family contact point and whether the house runs any family programme or calls.

Money, kindly and clearly

Insurance does not pay rent at a recovery residence. It may pay for outpatient treatment he attends while living there. Get the rate, deposit, what is included and the refund position in writing. If you are paying, decide in advance what you are paying for and for how long, and say it out loud to him — open-ended funding with unspoken conditions tends to end badly for everyone.

Let him choose it

This is the hardest part and it matters more than the thread count. A house he picked, visited and agreed to is a house he stays in; a house imposed on him becomes something to leave. Do the verification, shortlist two or three, and let him make the call. Go on the tour with him if he wants you there, and ask your questions after his.

Look after yourself too

Al-Anon, Nar-Anon and family therapy exist because this is exhausting and because the people around a man in early recovery often carry it alone. Whatever he decides, that support is yours to use, and using it is not a comment on him.
