Our approach

Freedom throughstructure.

The house expectations at The Foundry, explained in plain language — and an honest account of what recovery housing is and isn’t.

House expectations

Ten thingswe ask ofevery resident.

Written down, applied to everyone, explained before you move in. Ask us for the current residency requirements and house policies; we’ll walk you through them on the first call or the tour.

  • Substance-free environmentNo alcohol or drugs on the property. That includes products containing alcohol, like some mouthwashes and aftershaves.
  • Randomized substance testingDrug and alcohol testing on no schedule you can plan around. It protects every man in the house.
  • House curfewsBoth houses have a curfew. We go over the current times before you move in.
  • Recovery meeting participationRequired meetings, a sponsor and the 12 steps. Meetings and clubhouses are close to both houses.
  • Household responsibilitiesRotating chores and house meetings. The home is kept clean and organized by the men who live in it.
  • Peer accountabilityMen in the same position who notice, say something, and expect the same in return.
  • Employment or educationWork, school, volunteering or an outpatient program within your first couple of weeks, with help getting there.
  • Respect for fellow residentsFor housemates, staff, neighbors and the house itself.
  • Individual responsibilityYour recovery is yours. The house supports it; it can’t do it for you.
  • Community expectationsVisitors are approved and during set hours, after an initial blackout period. Residents in good standing may have a car.

Why it works this way

Structure isa kindness.

A house with no rules is a landlord, and a house with rules nobody enforces is worse, because it sells the appearance of safety. The Foundry’s expectations exist because of specific, predictable ways that early recovery goes wrong.

When someone struggles, we handle it honestly and without shame, but we protect the house. A relapse leads to a conversation about the appropriate level of care, with detox or treatment arranged when that is what’s needed.
