Most of what decides a first year in sober living is not the house. It is whether the ordinary week works — whether you can get to a meeting on a Tuesday night, whether the job is reachable at six in the morning, and whether the hours between are filled. North Miami Beach is a good place to do this, and here is the practical version of why.
Meetings you can actually reach
Miami-Dade carries one of the denser meeting schedules in the country, and the corridor from North Miami Beach up through Aventura and across to North Miami has options at most hours, including early mornings and late nights. Current schedules are worth checking at the source rather than from a list that ages: Miami-Dade Intergroup for AA and NA's meeting search for NA, both of which show in-person and online options.
What matters more than the count is repetition. One meeting, the same night, the same room, until people know your name and notice when you are missing — that is the thing that works. Pick it in the first week rather than sampling for a month.
Work within reach
The job market here is wider than the immediate neighbourhood suggests. Aventura brings retail and restaurant work at scale, North Miami and the industrial pockets to the west bring warehousing, trades and delivery, and the hospitality corridor toward Sunny Isles and Miami Beach hires year round. Early recovery favours a job with a fixed schedule and colleagues around — nights alone in a car are hard on a first year, whatever the money looks like.
If you need help getting started, CareerSource South Florida runs free job centres with resume help and referrals, and does not charge for anything.
Getting around without a car
Plenty of men arrive without a licence, without a car, or both. Miami-Dade Transit's buses cover the Biscayne and 163rd Street corridors well, and the trip planner at miamidade.gov is accurate enough to plan a shift around. Budget time rather than optimism: a twenty-minute drive can be an hour by bus, and the difference shows up as lateness in week three if you have not accounted for it.
Houses also matter here. Ask any residence you are considering whether it runs rides to meetings and whether anyone is driving in the mornings. At The Foundry that coordination is part of the house rather than a favour you have to ask for.
Sorting out the paperwork early
Licence, ID, phone, bank account, and any court or probation obligations — do these in the first fortnight, when you have time and structure, rather than in month three when a job depends on them. A Florida ID or licence goes through the FLHSMV, and appointments beat walk-ins by a wide margin.
The empty hours
The hardest part of early recovery here is not temptation, it is Sunday afternoon. North Miami Beach helps: the Greynolds Park trails, Oleta River State Park across the causeway, the beach at Sunny Isles, free weights and a basketball court within a short ride. The Lakehouse backyard sits on the water with kayaks on it, which exists for exactly this reason — something to do with a body that has nowhere to put itself.
What a week looks like from our house
Up early, a morning check-in, work or a programme during the day, a meeting most evenings, curfew, and a house full of men doing the same thing. Randomized testing in the background. Chores, because a house that nobody cleans becomes a house nobody respects. It is unremarkable on purpose — the unremarkable week is the product.
The Foundry's Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace, North Miami Beach, FL 33162: men-only, FARR-accredited, and five minutes from most of what is described above. If you are weighing it against our Hollywood house, the comparison is here, and the first 30 days are here.
