There is a particular hour in early recovery that nobody warns you about. It isn’t the craving at midnight; it’s the flat stretch of late afternoon when the day’s obligations are done, the house is quiet, and your head starts looking for the old exit. The men I’ve watched get through it best tend to have one simple answer ready: go outside and walk.
Aventura is a good city for that answer. It’s small, mostly flat, and stitched together with parks and paths that most visitors never notice on their way to the mall. This is a slow guide to those places, and to why a walk might be the most underrated recovery tool in South Florida. It’s part of our Sober Living in Aventura series.
Why walking, of all things
I’m not a clinician, and this isn’t medical advice. But you don’t need a study to notice what a walk does. It gives restless energy somewhere to go. It puts you in public, among other people living ordinary lives. It turns a vague hour into a task with a beginning and an end. And it’s free, which matters when you’re rebuilding finances along with everything else.
Walking also travels well with the other habits of early recovery. Call your sponsor on the way. Walk to a meeting instead of getting a ride. Do a lap with a housemate after dinner and talk about the day. The parks below make all of that easy.
The Don Soffer Exercise Trail
Start here. The Don Soffer Exercise Trail circles the Turnberry golf course along Country Club Drive: 3.1 miles of ten-foot-wide paved path, with shade trees, benches, chilled water fountains and ground lighting. It’s open 24 hours, it’s free, and walkers, runners, cyclists and people with dogs on short leashes all share it.
What I like about the loop is that it doesn’t ask anything of you. There are no decisions. You start, you keep going, and about an hour later you’re back where you began, a little lighter. In the first weeks, when every day seems to be made of decisions, that’s a relief.
Try this: walk the loop at the same time every day for two weeks. Morning works for most people. Notice what changes.
Founders Park
Founders Park is Aventura’s main city park: twelve acres just south of the Lehman Causeway, east of West Country Club Drive, with a monument to the city’s founders at its center. The northern section has clay tennis courts, pickleball courts, a basketball court, an athletic field, an open play area, picnic shelters, a playground, a splash pad for families and a short fitness trail with four exercise stations. A separate bayside section sits to the south.
For a man in recovery, Founders Park is less about scenery and more about people. Pickup basketball and pickleball are among the easiest ways to be around others without alcohol anywhere in the picture. Nobody on a court cares what your story is. They care whether you’ll pass.
What an hour on the trail actually looks like
Here is how a lap of the Don Soffer trail tends to go for a man a few weeks into a sober house. The first ten minutes are noise: the job interview tomorrow, the text from home he hasn’t answered, the craving that showed up at lunch for no reason. By the first mile, his breathing has found a rhythm and the noise is quieter. Somewhere around the second mile, the thing he’s been avoiding thinking about comes up, and because he’s walking rather than sitting, it doesn’t feel quite so heavy. By the time he’s back at the start, he hasn’t solved anything. He’s just walked through it instead of around it.
That’s most of what a walk does. It doesn’t fix the problem. It changes the size of it.
The smaller city parks
Aventura also has smaller neighborhood spaces, including Waterways Park, the Waterways Dog Park and Veterans Park. Hours and amenities change, so check the city’s site before you go. They’re useful for exactly the reason they’re small: a ten-minute sit on a bench, a phone call in the shade, a place to wait out a bad half-hour without spending money.
Oleta River State Park
A few minutes south, in North Miami Beach, Oleta River State Park is the region’s big green escape. The Oleta River runs through it, and you can paddle among mangroves; there are also miles of off-road biking trails. The state notes that the park often reaches capacity on weekends, so arrive early or call the ranger station first. The address is 3400 NE 163rd Street.
Oleta is where a walk becomes an outing. It’s a good choice for the first long weekend in a sober house, when the hours feel endless and you need something physical and absorbing. Go with housemates. Bring water. Leave the phone in your pocket.
Greynolds Park
Also in North Miami Beach, Greynolds Park is an older county park with walking paths and trails, views of the Oleta River for bird-watching, picnic shelters, two playgrounds and a nine-hole golf course. East Greynolds Park has a fishing dock and a canoe and kayak launch. The county lists a free bluegrass festival on the first Sunday of each month.
Greynolds has a quieter, slightly old-Florida feel. It suits the reflective walk: slow pace, no destination, a bench by the water and a few minutes of honest thinking.

The water at home
Not every good walk needs a car. At Foundry: Lakehouse, a few minutes south of Aventura, the backyard opens onto a lake with canoes, kayaks, a hammock and a tree swing under a big shade tree. At Foundry: Beachhouse in Hollywood, the Intracoastal runs right past the house and the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk is a short trip away. Sometimes the best park is the one you can walk to in your socks.
Building a routine around the outdoors
Parks help most when they’re part of a routine rather than an occasional treat. A simple structure that works for many men in early recovery:
- A morning anchor. The same walk, the same time, every day.
- An afternoon option. When the 5 p.m. restlessness hits, have one place already chosen: a lap at Founders Park, a bench at Greynolds.
- A weekend outing. Oleta, the beach, or Greynolds with housemates.
- A walking meeting route. Find a meeting you can walk to and make it non-negotiable.
- A walking phone call. Call your sponsor while you walk. It’s easier to talk honestly side by side, even with someone who isn’t there.
None of this replaces meetings, a sponsor, a structured house or treatment where it’s needed. It sits alongside them.
Walking as fellowship
Some of the best conversations in a sober house happen side by side rather than face to face. Two men who would never sit down for a heart-to-heart will talk honestly on a walk, because nobody has to make eye contact and the path gives the conversation somewhere to go. If you live in a sober house near Aventura, invite a housemate for a lap after dinner. Ask how his week is really going. Listen more than you talk.
Walking with someone newer than you is also a form of service. You remember what week two felt like. He doesn’t know yet that it gets easier. A walk is a way of telling him without making a speech.
A note on heat and safety
South Florida weather is no joke. Walk early or late in summer, carry water, and wear sun protection. Lightning storms build quickly on summer afternoons, so get off open ground when you hear thunder. Tell someone at the house where you’re going if you head to Oleta or anywhere remote, and take your phone.
Choosing the right park for the moment
A rough guide: if you need to burn energy, do the Don Soffer loop at a brisk pace. If you need people, go to Founders Park and find a game. If you need quiet, go to Greynolds and sit by the river. If you need a full reset, plan a morning at Oleta with a housemate. Knowing which one you need is a small piece of self-awareness worth practicing.
