15 Things to Do in Aventura, Florida, Without a Drink

Ask anyone what to do in Aventura and you’ll hear “the mall” before they finish breathing in. Fair enough. But if you’re newly sober — or you’re visiting someone who is — the useful question is a little different: what can you do around here on a Tuesday night or a long Sunday that doesn’t revolve around a bar?

Turns out, a lot. Here are fifteen activities in Aventura, Florida and right next door, each with a note on why it works in early recovery. Some are free. Most are within a few minutes of each other. All of them are better with company, so bring a housemate.

Outdoors and active

1. Walk (or run) the Don Soffer Exercise Trail

A 3.1-mile paved loop around the Turnberry golf course on Country Club Drive, with shade trees, benches and chilled water fountains. It’s open 24 hours and free, and it’s lit at ground level. City details here.

Why it works: one lap is a clean, measurable win. Do it at the same time every morning for a month and you’ve built a habit without trying.

2. Spend an afternoon at Founders Park

Aventura’s 12-acre park has tennis and pickleball courts, a basketball court, an athletic field, picnic shelters and a short fitness trail with exercise stations. Founders Park sits just south of the Lehman Causeway.

Why it works: pickup games are the easiest sober social life there is. Nobody asks what you’re drinking on a court.

3. Paddle the mangroves at Oleta River State Park

A few minutes south in North Miami Beach, Oleta River State Park has kayaking through mangrove forest and miles of off-road biking trails. It fills up on weekends, so go early.

Why it works: it’s hard to ruminate while you’re steering a kayak.

4. Hit the beach before nine

The beaches across the causeway in Sunny Isles and south at Haulover are a short drive away. Early morning is the move: cooler, quieter, and before the crowd and the coolers show up. Note that the northern part of Haulover beach is clothing-optional, so check where you’re parking.

Why it works: sunrise on the Atlantic resets a bad night better than almost anything.

5. Bird-watch and picnic at Greynolds Park

Greynolds Park in North Miami Beach has walking trails, river views for bird-watching, picnic shelters and a canoe and kayak launch at East Greynolds. The county lists a free bluegrass festival on the first Sunday of each month.

Why it works: a free, regular, daytime event is the kind of thing you can build a sober weekend around.

6. Use the gym like it’s your job

Aventura has gyms on almost every block, including big-box clubs and smaller studios. Pick one close to where you live or work so there’s no excuse.

Why it works: it gives the 5–7 p.m. window, the hardest one for a lot of people, a job to do.

Around Aventura Mall

7. Ride the Aventura Slide Tower

The mall’s 93-foot slide tower by artist Carsten Höller opened in 2018, and it’s both a sculpture and a ride. Check the mall’s site for hours and any rules before you go.

Why it works: you’ll laugh. Early recovery needs more of that than people think.

8. Do the art walk

Aventura Mall has a collection of contemporary art throughout the property, including works by artists such as Daniel Arsham, Louise Bourgeois and Jorge Pardo. It’s free to look at. Make it a slow lap with coffee.

Why it works: it’s an hour in air conditioning that isn’t a screen or a stool.

9. Catch a movie

The AMC at Aventura Mall is a big multiplex with premium formats. Matinees are cheaper and quieter.

Why it works: two hours, a clear start and end, and no decisions to make about the drinks menu.

Culture and community

10. See a show at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center at 3385 NE 188th Street hosts concerts, musicals and cultural programs year-round. Check the calendar and book ahead.

Why it works: live music without a bar tab attached.

11. Visit the Ancient Spanish Monastery

In North Miami Beach, the cloisters of St. Bernard de Clairvaux were brought over from Spain and reassembled here. It’s quiet, unusual and close by.

Why it works: twenty minutes of real quiet. If you’re working the steps, there are worse places to think about step eleven.

12. Go to a city event

The City of Aventura and the cultural center run events throughout the year. Our guide to events in Aventura explains where to find them and how to plan a sober weekend around them.

Recovery-first ideas

13. Coffee after the meeting

The most underrated sober social life in South Florida. Find a meeting near Aventura with AA’s meeting finder or NA’s meeting search, then stay for the coffee. That’s where sponsors and friendships come from.

14. A lake afternoon at the Lakehouse

If you live at Foundry: Lakehouse in North Miami Beach, a few minutes south of Aventura, the best activity might be in the backyard: canoes, kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit on the water.

15. Volunteer

Service is a recovery principle for a reason. Parks, food banks and community groups around northern Miami-Dade take volunteers. It also counts toward the daytime commitment many sober houses expect if you’re not working yet.

Things to do in Aventura at night, sober

Nights are the hardest part of a sober social life, and Aventura’s nightlife leans toward bars and lounges. But there are good evening options if you plan:

  • A late lap of the Don Soffer trail. It’s lit at ground level and open 24 hours. Cooler than daytime in summer, and a good way to burn off a restless evening.
  • An evening show at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Check end times against your curfew before you buy.
  • A late movie at the mall, with a firm plan for getting home.
  • An evening meeting, then dessert. Plenty of meetings run at 7 or 8 p.m. Going for coffee or ice cream after is a tradition for a reason.
  • The fire pit at home. If you live at the Lakehouse, the best night out might be a night in, around the fire by the water with your housemates.

The rule of thumb: decide where the night ends before it starts.

Rainy day options

South Florida summer storms arrive fast and leave fast, but some days it just pours. Indoor options around Aventura include the mall (art, the movie theater, a long walk in the air conditioning), the gym, the public library branches in northern Miami-Dade, and a long meeting. Rainy afternoons are also a good time for the practical stuff that early recovery is full of: updating your resume, calling your family, reading your step work, or helping a housemate with his.

What to skip in the first months

Not every attraction in the area is a good idea early on. Bar-heavy nights out, waterfront lounges and the racing and casino at Gulfstream Park, just over the Broward line, are better left for later, or for never. There’s no shame in that; it’s just planning. If you’re unsure, ask your sponsor or your housemates before you go.

A simple sober Saturday in Aventura

  • 7:30 a.m. One lap of the Don Soffer trail.
  • 9:00 a.m. A morning meeting, then coffee.
  • 11:30 a.m. Kayak or bike at Oleta River State Park.
  • 2:00 p.m. Lunch, then the art walk and the slide tower at the mall.
  • 5:00 p.m. Gym or pickup basketball at Founders Park.
  • 7:00 p.m. Dinner with the house.
  • 8:30 p.m. A movie or a show, home before curfew.

Not every Saturday needs to be this full. But having a plan on Friday is the difference between a good weekend and a long one.

Doing it on a budget

Early recovery usually comes with a tight budget. The good news is that many of the best things on this list cost nothing: the Don Soffer trail, Founders Park, the beach, the art at the mall, meetings and the coffee after them. Paid outings like kayak rentals, shows and films are worth saving for once a week or once a month, as something to look forward to. Splitting costs with housemates helps too.

Living near all of this
