On the Water and Out of the Noise: The Best Sober Living Settings in Hollywood and North Miami Beach

Living ConditionsSeptember 20263 min readBy The Foundry Sober Living

Two houses can run the same programme and feel completely different to live in, and a lot of that difference is the street. Setting is not a luxury question in early recovery — it decides how easy it is to sleep, whether there is anywhere to go when the walls close in, and what you walk past every day.

What to look at, not just look for

Stand outside the house for five minutes before you decide anything. Is it a six-lane road or a residential street? Is there a liquor store or a bar within sight of the front door? Is the sidewalk usable and lit? Is there anywhere within walking distance to be — a park, a gym, a beach, a diner — that costs nothing and stays open in the evening? Those four answers describe your next six months more accurately than the photographs do.

Why water keeps coming up

It is not about the view being nice, though it is. Open space at the back of a house gives a body somewhere to put itself: a walk, a paddle, twenty minutes outside instead of twenty minutes on a phone. Men in their first months describe it in almost identical terms — a place to go when the house feels small. Anything that serves that function works; water just happens to do it well in South Florida.

Hollywood: the Intracoastal side

Hollywood works well when your obligations are in Broward. The stretch near the Intracoastal is residential and calm, Hollywood Beach and the Broadwalk are walkable for free, and Fort Lauderdale is close enough for work without being on your doorstep. The thing to check in Hollywood specifically is which side of the tracks a house sits on — the city ranges from quiet waterfront streets to busy corridors within a mile.

North Miami Beach: quiet streets, city access

North Miami Beach suits men whose lives run through Miami-Dade. The residential streets are quiet, the water is close, Greynolds Park and Oleta River State Park are short rides away, and Aventura, North Miami and Sunny Isles put a much larger job market within reach than the immediate neighbourhood suggests. Here the thing to check is the specific block: the city has genuinely peaceful streets and genuinely busy ones.

The trap in choosing on setting alone

A beautiful house with no supervision is still a bad house. Setting sits on top of the things that actually make a residence safe — FARR certification, randomized testing, a manager in the building, a written relapse policy. Get those right first, then choose the quieter street.

Our two

The Beachhouse sits on the Intracoastal at 701 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, FL 33019 — rooftop terrace, pool, kayaks, and Hollywood Beach a short walk away. The Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace, North Miami Beach, FL 33162, on quiet residential streets with a backyard on the water. Both men-only, both FARR-accredited, both chosen for the street as much as the building. Call (954) 817-7143 or come and stand outside for five minutes.
