People ask what the best men's sober living house in North Miami Beach is like, and the honest answer is that the good ones are boring on purpose. The week is the product. Here is what one looks like from the inside.
Monday
Up early — a house with no wake-up time is a house with no programme. Morning check-in with the other men: a sentence each on how you are and what the day holds. Then work, school or a programme, because every credible residence requires you to be doing one of the three. Evening meeting. Curfew. Somebody is cooking, somebody is complaining about the washing up.
Tuesday
A random test before you leave, because randomized means it lands on a Tuesday sometimes. It takes ten minutes and you stop resenting it around week three. Work. In the evening, the first of the week's harder conversations, usually with the man who arrived eight days ago and has decided the house is stupid.
Wednesday
House meeting. Chores get reassigned, grievances get aired, the manager says the thing nobody wants to hear about the state of the bathroom. It is unglamorous and it is the machinery that stops small resentments turning into somebody leaving at midnight.
Thursday
A normal day, which is the point. Work, meeting, gym or the backyard. Around this stage men often start taking on the practical repairs — the licence, the phone contract, the dentist, the first call to a family member in months. Early recovery has a large administrative component nobody warns you about.
Friday
The hardest night of the week, particularly in the first month, because Friday still has a shape in your head that no longer applies. Houses handle it with numbers: a meeting, then food, then people around. If you are visiting houses, ask specifically what Friday night looks like there.
Saturday
Chores in the morning, then actual free time, which is its own problem. The North Miami Beach answer is water — the backyard, kayaks, Oleta River State Park across the causeway, the beach at Sunny Isles — plus the gym, the basketball court, and whatever passes for a hobby. Men who get through year one almost always found something to do with a Saturday.
Sunday
A slower day. Cooking, a meeting, calls home, planning the week. Some men work Sundays and like it. The evening check-in is where the week gets closed honestly, which matters because the thing that goes wrong is almost never the thing that gets announced.
What holds it together
Randomized testing with a wide panel. A curfew that is enforced. A manager who notices. A written answer to what happens after a relapse, agreed before anyone needs it. And other men in the same week of the same problem, which is the part no rulebook produces.
