Men’s Sober Living in Miami: A Straight Guide for Men and Their Families

Miami, FLSeptember 20263 min readBy The Foundry Sober Living

Men's sober living in Miami is a crowded market with a wide quality range and very little public information. This is the plain version: what these houses are, what they cost, how long men stay, and what to check before anyone pays a deposit.

What a men's sober living house actually is

Housing with structure, not treatment. No substances on the property, randomized drug testing, a curfew, a requirement to be working, studying or in a programme, chores, and other men in the same position. Nobody there is providing medical care or managing a detox. If that is what is needed, it is a licensed programme first — FindTreatment.gov lists what is licensed, and the SAMHSA helpline on 1-800-662-HELP is free, confidential and open 24 hours.

Why men-only

Gender-separate housing is the norm in recovery residences rather than an unusual choice. In practice men perform less in a room of men, the conversations get to the real material faster, and the new-relationship problem that derails a lot of first years largely disappears. It is a design decision, and a house that cannot explain why it made that decision probably did not make one.

What it costs in Miami-Dade

Rates vary widely with room type, neighbourhood and what is bundled. Before comparing two numbers, compare what each includes: utilities, wifi, drug testing, transport to meetings, food. One house's lower rate often becomes the higher one once testing and rides are added. Insurance does not pay rent at a recovery residence; it may pay for outpatient treatment attended while living there, which is a separate service and a separate bill. Get the rate, deposit and refund position in writing before paying anything.

How long men stay

Longer than most people plan for. Thirty days is a stay that mostly covers the settling-in; the men who do best usually measure it in months, often six or more, because the point is a period of ordinary life with the structure still attached. Ask a house what its average length of stay is and whether there is a minimum commitment.

The rules, and why they exist

Expect randomized testing with a wide panel, a curfew, a ban on relationships early on, mandatory house meetings, chores, and a requirement to be occupied during the day. None of it is arbitrary — each rule exists because of a specific way that first years go wrong. A house with no rules is a landlord, and a house with rules nobody enforces is worse, because it sells the appearance of safety.

Checking a Miami house is legitimate

Certification first: Florida certifies recovery residences through FARR, against the NARR national standards. Ask for the certificate. Then supervision: who manages the house, how long they have been sober, how many residents per manager, who is in the building overnight. Then the relapse policy in writing, before move-in — discharging a man onto the street the day he relapses is both common here and dangerous, since tolerance falls during abstinence and overdose risk right afterwards is high.

And treat any offer that resembles recruitment as a red flag: free rent tied to a particular treatment centre, someone offering to pay your first month, pressure to switch insurance. Patient brokering is a crime in Florida and it still happens.

Where we sit

The Foundry runs two men-only, FARR-accredited houses: the Lakehouse at 871 NE 182nd Terrace, North Miami Beach, FL 33162, and the Beachhouse at 701 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, FL 33019. Call or text (954) 817-7143 and ask us everything above — and if what you need is treatment rather than housing, we will say so rather than take a deposit.

More detail in how to judge a house yourself, why men-only houses work differently, and how our two houses compare.
