North Miami Beach Sober Living: A Local Guide for Men in Recovery

North Miami Beach, FLOctober 20269 min readBy The Foundry Sober Living

If you are looking at sober living in North Miami Beach, you are probably weighing two things at once: whether a structured house is the right next step, and whether this particular corner of Miami-Dade is the right place to take it. This guide is written by the people who run a men’s recovery residence here — Foundry: Lakehouse, at 871 NE 182nd Terrace — so take it as a local’s view, not a neutral directory. We will tell you what the neighborhood is actually like day to day, what to check in any house you tour, and how to get here.

Why North Miami Beach works for early recovery

North Miami Beach sits in the northeast corner of Miami-Dade County, between Aventura to the north, North Miami to the south and west, and the barrier-island towns along the ocean. For a man coming out of detox or residential treatment, the appeal is less about postcard Miami and more about ordinary logistics. The streets around the Lakehouse are residential and quiet. Groceries, gyms, pharmacies and shopping centers are a short walk or bus ride away. I-95 is close, which matters when your job, your court date or your outpatient program is somewhere else in South Florida.

It is also far enough from the nightlife strips of South Beach and downtown that a Friday night does not walk past your front door. That sounds like a small thing. In month one, it is not.

The other reason men end up here is the recovery community itself. Northern Miami-Dade has AA clubhouses and a steady schedule of meetings, and Broward County — with one of the densest meeting calendars in the country — starts a few minutes north. You can build a home group close by and still have options when you need a different room on a different night.

What sober living in North Miami Beach is, and what it isn’t

A sober living house is housing with structure. It is not treatment. Nobody at a recovery residence is prescribing medication, managing withdrawal or running therapy groups. What the house provides is a substance-free place to live, house expectations that everyone follows, randomized testing, and a group of men who are trying to do the same thing you are.

If what you need right now is medical care or clinical treatment, start there. FindTreatment.gov, run by SAMHSA, lists licensed programs, and a good sober living house will tell you honestly if you need a higher level of care first. Our longer explanation is in Treatment vs. sober living.

A typical week in a North Miami Beach sober house

Every house runs its own schedule, but the shape is similar. At the Lakehouse it looks roughly like this.

  • Mornings start on time. Men who work leave for work; men in an outpatient program head there. Nobody spends the day in bed.
  • Daytime is for the commitment every resident makes once he has settled in: a job, school, volunteering or an outpatient program. Early on, we help with resumes, applications and interview prep.
  • Evenings are for meetings, dinner, a call to a sponsor, and the house itself. Chores rotate. There is a regular house meeting.
  • Curfew applies to everyone. So does randomized drug and alcohol testing, on no schedule you can plan around.
  • Weekends are where the water helps: canoes and kayaks out back, the hammock and tree swing under the big shade tree, the fire pit after dark.

Meetings, sponsors and the recovery community nearby

The Foundry is built around the 12-step program, and residents are expected to attend meetings, get a sponsor and stay involved with AA. In practice, that is easier in North Miami Beach than in many places, because there is a lot to choose from within a short drive or bus ride.

Meeting lists change, so we point residents to the live finders rather than a printed schedule that goes stale: AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search. Our own round-up for the area is in AA and NA meetings in Miami.

One practical habit that helps: pick two meetings you can reach without a car and make them non-negotiable for the first month. Transportation problems are the most common excuse we hear, and the easiest one to remove in advance.

Getting around without a car

Plenty of men arrive without a car, or without a license for a while. North Miami Beach is workable that way. Public transportation runs close to the Lakehouse, and Publix, gyms and shopping are within walking distance. Miami-Dade’s transit system has a trip planner at miamidade.gov/transportation, and Tri-Rail connects Miami-Dade to Broward and Palm Beach for longer trips. While residents are getting on their feet, The Foundry also provides rides to appointments and meetings.

Work in northern Miami-Dade

A paycheck and a schedule are recovery tools in their own right, and North Miami Beach puts you inside one of the deepest job markets in South Florida without putting you in the middle of Miami. Hospitality, retail, restaurants, construction and trades, warehouse and delivery work are all within reach. Aventura, a few minutes north, is a major retail and hospitality employer on its own.

The expectation at the Lakehouse is simple: once you’ve settled in, you are working, studying, volunteering or attending an outpatient program. If you need help getting there, that help is part of the house.

What sober living costs in North Miami Beach

Rates vary with the room, the length of stay and what is bundled in. Before you compare two prices, compare what each includes. At the Lakehouse, furnished rooms come with utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet. Some houses charge separately for drug testing, transportation or internet, and a lower rate can become the higher one once those are added.

Sober living is generally private pay. Insurance covers clinical treatment, not housing, though outpatient care attended while you live in a sober house may be billable. Scholarships are available at The Foundry for qualified residents when cost is the only thing in the way. More detail: what sober living costs in Miami and sober living scholarships in Florida.

Sober things to do around North Miami Beach

Weekends and evenings are where early recovery gets tested, so it helps that this part of Miami-Dade has plenty to do that has nothing to do with drinking.

  • Get on the water. At the Lakehouse that starts in the backyard with the canoes and kayaks. Nearby, Oleta River State Park offers paddling, biking and walking trails in the middle of the city.
  • The beach. The beaches along Sunny Isles and Haulover are a short drive east. Go early, before the crowds.
  • The gym. There are several close to the house. A regular workout slot is one of the easiest habits to build in month one.
  • Coffee after the meeting. The most underrated sober social life there is.

The aim is not to fill every hour. It is to have somewhere good to put the hours that used to be the hardest ones.

Who North Miami Beach suits, and who it doesn’t

North Miami Beach tends to suit men who want quiet, who need to stay within reach of work, family or court dates in Miami-Dade, and who do better away from nightlife. It suits fewer men who want to be in the center of everything, or whose old life is concentrated in this exact part of town. If being close to the beach and Broward’s meeting schedule matters more to you, Hollywood may be the better fit. And if you genuinely can’t decide, call us and say so — we will ask a few questions and tell you honestly which house we would put you in, including if the answer is neither.

How to judge any sober house in North Miami Beach

There are good houses and bad ones in every part of South Florida. These are the questions we would ask if we were touring someone else’s.

  1. Is it certified? Florida’s voluntary certification for recovery residences runs through the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR), the credentialing entity named by the Florida Department of Children and Families. Ask to see the certificate. Our explainer on Florida sober house regulations covers what certification actually requires.
  2. Who runs it day to day? Ask who manages the house, how often they are there, and how many residents each manager is responsible for.
  3. How does testing work? Random, observed, frequent enough to mean something? Or a schedule everyone knows?
  4. What happens after a relapse? Get the policy in writing before move-in.
  5. What does the rate include? Utilities, testing, transport, internet, food arrangements.
  6. Can you talk to a resident without staff in the room? A confident house says yes.
  7. Is anyone offering you something for free? Free rent tied to a particular treatment center, or someone offering to switch your insurance, is a red flag. Florida law restricts this kind of referral arrangement.

We go deeper in the best sober living house in North Miami Beach: how to judge for yourself and the touring checklist.

Why the Lakehouse is men-only

Both Foundry houses are men-only. Gender-separate housing is the norm in recovery residences, not an unusual choice. In practice, men perform less in a room of men, conversations get to the real material faster, and the new-relationship problem that derails a lot of first years largely disappears. The longer argument is in why men-only houses work differently.

Inside Foundry: Lakehouse

The Lakehouse is The Foundry’s original house. It has eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, with furnished one-, two- and four-person rooms. Inside there is air conditioning, walk-in closets, laundry, a full kitchen and business-grade high-speed internet. Outside, the backyard opens straight onto the water, with canoes, kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit.

It is FARR-certified and men-only, and it is run by people who are in recovery themselves. Most men who live here arrive from detox, residential treatment, or a PHP or IOP program in South Florida, and most stay between three and twelve months. Nobody is pushed out on a date; you leave when you and your support system agree you are ready.
