Sober House in North Miami Beach: What to Look For

How to ChooseSeptember 20263 min readBy The Foundry Sober Living

Miami has no shortage of sober houses. What it has a shortage of is sober houses that will still be answering the phone in eighteen months. North Miami Beach sits in a useful spot — quieter than South Beach, cheaper than Aventura, with real jobs and real meetings within a few miles — and the houses here range from excellent to appalling. Here is how to tell which one you are standing in.

Start with accreditation

Florida certifies recovery residences through FARR, which applies the national standards written by the National Alliance for Recovery Residences. Certification is voluntary for most houses, which is exactly why it is worth asking about: an operator who has gone through it has agreed to a code of ethics, an inspection, a complaint process and someone outside the building who can be called. Ask for the certificate. A house that is certified will send it to you in a minute.

Ask what happens on a Tuesday

Anyone can describe a philosophy. Ask instead what an ordinary Tuesday looks like — what time the house is up, whether there is a morning meeting, who is working, who is in treatment, what time curfew falls, and who is in the building overnight. A house with structure answers in specifics. A house that rents beds answers in adjectives.

Testing, and what follows a positive

Screens should be randomized rather than scheduled, the panel should include fentanyl, and a refusal should count as a positive. The more revealing question is what happens afterwards. A house that puts a man on the street the same day he relapses is creating an overdose risk, because tolerance drops fast and a person who has just been discharged is often alone. Good houses confirm the result, talk, and make a clinical decision — detox, a return to treatment, more outpatient structure, or a tightly conditioned second chance. Some things do end a tenancy that day, and should: dealing in the house, violence, or bringing substances onto the property.

Who actually runs the building

Ask who the house manager is, how long they have been sober, whether they live on site, and who covers nights and weekends. Then ask how many residents there are per manager. The number that matters is not how nice the kitchen is; it is whether somebody notices when a man stops coming out of his room.

What the rent covers — and what it does not

Get it in writing. Weekly or monthly rate, deposit, what is included (utilities, wifi, testing, transport to meetings, food or not), and how a refund works if things end early. Ask whether there is an intake fee, and whether testing is billed separately. Health insurance does not pay rent at a recovery residence, whatever an admissions line implies; insurance pays for treatment, which is a different service you may be receiving at the same time.

Location does more work than people expect

In North Miami Beach the practical questions are whether you can reach a meeting without a car, whether the bus gets you to work, and whether the street is quiet at eleven at night. Aventura, Sunny Isles and North Miami are all a short drive, so the job market is broader than the immediate neighbourhood suggests. A house that is cheap because it sits on a six-lane road next to a liquor store is not cheap.

Warning signs

Be careful with any house that offers to pay you to move in, waives rent in exchange for attending a particular treatment centre, pressures you to switch insurance, will not let you see the house before you commit, or cannot produce written rules. Patient brokering is illegal in Florida and it is still around. If an offer feels like a recruitment bonus, it is one.

What we do at the Lakehouse

The Foundry's Lakehouse at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach is a men's residence: FARR-accredited, randomized testing, a live structure rather than a list on a wall, and a backyard on the water that gives the empty hours somewhere to go. If you are comparing us against other houses in the area, ask us all of the questions above — we would rather you asked than guessed. You can also read how house rules actually work or what the first 30 days feel like.
