Sober Living and Cooper City: What “Home” Means When You’re Getting Sober

Cooper City, FLAugust 202610 min readBy Richard RibacoffHeader photo: Francesca Saraco / Unsplash

Cooper City calls itself “Someplace Special,” and if you grew up there you probably rolled your eyes at the slogan at least once. It’s a quiet, family-shaped suburb in southwest Broward County: cul-de-sacs, ball fields, good schools, lakes behind the houses. For most people that adds up to an easy definition of home. For a man in early recovery, the word gets more complicated. This essay is about sober living and Cooper City, and about a question I’ve watched a lot of men wrestle with: when you get sober, where is home supposed to be?

I’ve spent years around recovery housing in South Florida. I don’t have a neat answer. What I have is a way of thinking about it that seems to help, plus the practical details a man from Cooper City (or his family) needs: the ZIP codes, the parks, the buses, the meetings, and where The Foundry’s two men’s sober living houses sit in relation to the city. We don’t have a house in Cooper City. I’ll be clear about where ours are.

The house you grew up in is not always the safest place to live

There’s a quiet assumption that the best place to recover is the place you came from. Your bedroom is still there. Your parents love you. The neighborhood is calm and well kept. Why would anyone pay to live somewhere else?

Because home holds habits. The garage where you used to drink, the friend two streets over who still sells, the drive you know by heart to the gas station that sells cold beer at 11 p.m. None of that changes when you come home from treatment. You change, or you’re trying to, and the house stays exactly the same. A lot of men find that their childhood bedroom pulls them back toward the person they were when they last slept in it.

There’s also the family side. Parents and partners who have lived through active addiction are tired, scared and watchful. Everyone means well, and everyone is on edge. Early recovery under that kind of watching can turn into a daily negotiation over curfews and phone checks, and nobody gets to heal. I’ve seen many families find that a little distance (a structured house fifteen or thirty minutes away) let them become a family again instead of a security detail.

What a sober house can be instead

A good men’s sober living house isn’t a substitute family and it isn’t treatment. It’s a temporary home with a specific job: to give a man safe, structured, sober ground while he rebuilds the habits that let him live anywhere. When it works, it feels less like an institution and more like a household of men who all want the same thing badly enough to hold each other to it.

That’s the sense of home I’ve come to trust in recovery. It isn’t about square footage or how long you’ve lived somewhere. It’s a place where the rules are clear, the people around you are honest, and you’re expected to show up for your own life.

What I would look for, if I were choosing for my own son

  • Certification. Florida’s voluntary certification for recovery residences is set out in section 397.487 of the Florida Statutes. The state’s credentialing body is the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR). Ask for the certificate and check it yourself. Our guide to FARR-certified sober living explains what it covers.
  • Rules that are enforced, not just posted. No alcohol or drugs, randomized drug testing, a curfew, chores, meetings, and a daytime commitment to work, school, volunteering or an outpatient program. See sober living rules for how this looks day to day.
  • Honest admissions. A house that says yes to everyone, or won’t say what happens after a relapse, is telling you something. You want a straight conversation about fit and about the right level of care.
  • Men only, on purpose. Men’s sober living takes away a layer of distraction and performance. It makes room for the blunt, unglamorous honesty that early recovery needs.

Cooper City, as it actually is

Cooper City was founded by Morris Cooper and incorporated in 1959. It covers a little over eight square miles, and the 2020 census counted 34,401 residents. That’s small next to its neighbors: Davie to the north, Pembroke Pines to the south, Hollywood and Davie to the east, and Southwest Ranches to the west. The city government is run from 9090 SW 50th Place, and its official website is coopercity.gov.

The city’s best-known public space is Brian Piccolo Sports Park & Velodrome at 9501 Sheridan Street. It’s a 175-acre Broward County park with soccer and cricket fields, basketball courts and a banked cycling track. You can find it in the Broward County Parks directory. The city also runs its own neighborhood parks, and the Davie/Cooper City Branch of Broward County Library sits just over the line at 4600 SW 82nd Avenue in Davie.

For a man in recovery, the character of the place cuts both ways. It’s calm, green and largely free of the bar-district pull of Fort Lauderdale or South Beach. It’s also car-dependent, spread out, and built around family life, which can feel isolating for a single man in his first sober months. Calm is good. Isolation is not.

Cooper City ZIP codes

If you’re searching for a Cooper City ZIP code, the answer isn’t a single number. The city shares its ZIP codes with its neighbors, and none of them uses “Cooper City” as the main postal name. Wikipedia lists 33328, 33330 and 33026 for the city. ZIP-code databases also list Cooper City as an alias for 33024, and Broward County gives Brian Piccolo Park a 33024 address. The two ZIPs in the 333xx range carry a Fort Lauderdale postal name, and 33024 and 33026 carry a Hollywood postal name. That’s why a Cooper City address can say “Fort Lauderdale” or “Hollywood” on an envelope.

ZIPArea it coversNote for a man in recovery
33328Northern and central Cooper City, shared with Davie; includes the city’s administrative addressClosest to the Davie/Cooper City library branch and to Davie’s shopping corridors; postal name Fort Lauderdale
33330Western Cooper City, shared with Davie and Southwest RanchesThe most rural-feeling edge; you’ll want a car or a ride plan; postal name Fort Lauderdale
33026Southern Cooper City, shared with Pembroke PinesResidential and quiet; Pembroke Pines shopping and services lie just south; postal name Hollywood
33024Eastern edge of Cooper City, shared with Hollywood and Pembroke PinesBrian Piccolo Park’s ZIP; closest to the CareerSource Broward South Center and the Hollywood side of the county; postal name Hollywood

ZIP codes are mail routes, not city limits, so a 33024 or 33328 address can just as easily be in Hollywood, Pembroke Pines or Davie. For the wider picture, our south Broward ZIP code guide covers every city around Hollywood, and the Hollywood ZIP code guide goes through the city next door one ZIP at a time.

Making a temporary home work

A sober house becomes home through routine, not furniture. In my experience the men who settle in fastest are the ones who fill the days with ordinary, repeatable things.

Meetings

Broward County has a deep schedule of AA and NA meetings, and a man coming from Cooper City can usually keep his home group if he moves into a house nearby. Schedules change, so use the official finders: Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Get a sponsor early. A sponsor is part of home too.

Work and structure

Work is the other half. At both Foundry houses, men are expected to be working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program within the first couple of weeks, and we help with resumes and interviews. For job leads near Cooper City, the CareerSource Broward South Center is at 7550 Davie Road Extension in Hollywood. If you’re planning the first month, the first 30 days in sober living is a useful read.

Getting around

Cooper City has no rail station, so most men drive or depend on rides at first. Broward County Transit runs fixed bus routes across the county, and Tri-Rail’s Sheridan Street and Hollywood stations are east of the city toward I-95. Early on, The Foundry provides rides to meetings and appointments. Residents in good standing may keep a car.

Sober time outdoors

Some of the best recovery hours are spent outdoors and unremarkable: a lap on a bike, a pickup game, a walk around a lake at dusk. Brian Piccolo Park is made for that, and southwest Broward is full of lakes and greenways. Boredom is a trigger. A full, physical day is the cure.

For families in Cooper City

If you’re a parent or a partner reading this, you may be asking a version of the same question: shouldn’t he just come home? Sometimes yes. Often the kinder answer is “not yet.” A few months in a structured house lets him rebuild trust through actions, and lets you rest. New Foundry residents have an initial blackout period before visits, which gives both sides time to settle. After that, visits are encouraged.

Look after yourself, too. Al-Anon holds meetings throughout Broward County, and our families page covers what to expect. The Foundry is a recovery residence, not treatment or detox.

Sober living near Cooper City: The Foundry’s two houses

There is no Foundry house in Cooper City. Men looking for sober living in Cooper City, FL usually choose between staying close to home and getting a bit of distance, and our two houses give one of each.

Foundry: Beachhouse is at 701 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, FL 33019, on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach. From central Cooper City it’s roughly 20 to 30 minutes east, depending on traffic. It has a rooftop terrace, a pool, ping pong, kayaks and a billiards room that looks out on the water. For a man whose job, sponsor or outpatient program is in Broward, it’s the natural fit. Our guide to sober living in Hollywood describes the area.

Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace, North Miami Beach, FL 33162. It’s a lakeside home with eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes and kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit, near Aventura and I-95. From Cooper City it’s roughly 30 to 45 minutes south. It suits a man who wants a clean break from the streets he grew up on.

Both houses are FARR-certified and run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship. Rooms are furnished, and utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet are included. It’s private pay, with scholarships for qualified men. Most men stay three to twelve months. If a man relapses, we have an honest conversation about the right level of care. We give rates on a call, never online.

Neighbors worth reading about

Cooper City sits among several communities we’ve written about. See sober living in Davie and Southwest Ranches to the north and west, and sober living in Pembroke Pines to the south.

Home, eventually

Here’s where I’ve landed after years of watching men move through recovery housing. Home in recovery isn’t a fixed address. For a while it’s a house full of other men doing the same hard thing. Then it’s an apartment you pay for yourself. And sometimes, months later, it’s that same quiet Cooper City street, now a place you can visit as the man you’re becoming rather than the one you were.
