The sun comes up out of the Atlantic, and on the beach in Hallandale it shows up early. By the time most of the city is awake, a few people are already out: walkers with their shoes in their hands, a swimmer checking the flags, someone stretching by the dunes. If you’re a man looking into sober living in Hallandale Beach, or near it, I’d like you to picture yourself as one of them. A sunrise on the sand, every morning, sober, is about as good a foundation for a new life as I know.
I’m Richard, and I’ve spent years around men’s recovery housing in South Florida. The men I’ve seen do best usually rebuilt their bodies along with everything else: they slept again, ate real food, moved every day and got outside. The beach makes that easy. This guide is about how to use it.
Straight answer first: The Foundry has no house in Hallandale Beach. Our closest house, Foundry: Beachhouse, is just north in Hollywood on the Intracoastal Waterway. Our other house, Foundry: Lakehouse, is a short drive south in North Miami Beach. Hallandale sits right between them.
Hallandale Beach at a glance
Hallandale Beach is a small coastal city at the southern edge of Broward County, just south of Hollywood. It covers about four and a half square miles including water, and the 2020 census counted 41,217 residents. It was incorporated as the Town of Hallandale in 1927, became the City of Hallandale in 1947, and took its current name in 1999. The City of Hallandale Beach runs city hall at 400 South Federal Highway.
The city has a barrier-island side along the ocean, lined with condominium towers, and a mainland side west of the Intracoastal with neighborhoods like Golden Isles, plus the shops and businesses along US 1 and Hallandale Beach Boulevard. It’s a quieter, more local beach town than some of its neighbors.
Sober living in Hallandale Beach: why the beach works
Nobody stays sober because of a nice view. But there are real reasons the ocean helps.
- Morning light resets sleep. Drugs and alcohol wreck sleep for weeks or months. Getting up at the same time and getting sunlight early is one of the simplest ways to bring it back.
- Exercise burns off restlessness. Walking or running on sand is hard work. A tired body sleeps better and craves less.
- It’s free and it’s always there. A man with no car and no money in his first weeks can still walk to the ocean.
- It gives you perspective. Standing at the edge of the Atlantic at dawn has a way of shrinking problems down to size.
A sober morning on the sand
Before sunrise: up and out
Set a bedtime and keep it; a house curfew helps. Get up before the sun, drink water, eat something small and head out. Don’t check your phone first.
On the beach: walk, then work
Hallandale has two city beach parks. South City Beach Park, at 1870 S. Ocean Drive, is the main public facility, with restrooms, outdoor showers, a pavilion, sand volleyball and two bocce courts. North City Beach Park, a short walk up the beach, has its own volleyball courts, restrooms and showers, plus the city’s much-photographed beach-ball water tower by local artist Jim Weinberg. Visit Florida reports that lifeguards are on duty year-round. Walk the hard sand near the water for a mile, then do a simple workout: push-ups, squats, lunges, planks. You don’t need a gym.
In the water: respect it
The Atlantic can be calm or rough depending on wind and weather. Swim near a lifeguard tower, check the warning flags and never swim alone. Early recovery is no time to take risks you don’t need to take.
After: coffee and a meeting
There are AA and NA meetings all across south Broward; find one that fits your schedule. A beach walk, a coffee and a meeting is a solid start to any day. Then on to work.
Building fitness, not just killing time
Some men come into recovery in rough physical shape. That’s fine. Start small: a 20-minute walk becomes 40 minutes, then a slow jog, then a real run. Play pickup volleyball. Take up swimming laps. If you join a gym, go at the same time every day and bring a sober buddy from the house. Track your progress in a notebook. Watching yourself get stronger week by week is a quiet kind of confidence that a lot of men haven’t felt in years.
One caution: don’t trade one compulsion for another. Exercise is a tool, not a cure. If you notice you’re using workouts to avoid meetings or feelings, talk about it with your sponsor.
Hallandale Beach ZIP codes
Hallandale Beach is unusually simple. Wikipedia’s infobox for the city lists one ZIP code, 33009, and USPS-based listings at unitedstateszipcodes.org confirm it, with “Hallandale” as the preferred postal name and “Hallandale Beach” as an acceptable one. A second ZIP, 33008, exists but is a PO Box ZIP for the Hallandale post office with no residential addresses, according to zip-codes.com. Note that USPS lists “Pembroke Park” as not acceptable for 33009, a reminder that the neighboring town to the west has its own ZIPs.
| ZIP | Area it covers | Note for a man in recovery |
|---|---|---|
| 33009 | All of Hallandale Beach’s street addresses, from the ocean to the western neighborhoods | Beach parks on the east side; shops, jobs and bus routes along US 1 and Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Foundry: Beachhouse. |
| 33008 | PO boxes at the Hallandale post office only | No homes in this ZIP. If you see it on a listing, it’s a mailing address, not a location. |
If you’re searching for sober living Hallandale Beach FL by ZIP, that means you’re really choosing between the beach side and the mainland side of one ZIP. Visit both.
Getting around without a car
Broward County Transit runs bus routes through Hallandale Beach along the main roads, and its website lists Hallandale Beach community shuttle routes as well. The nearest Tri-Rail station is the Hollywood station at 3001 Hollywood Boulevard, just west of I-95, which connects north to Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach County and south to Miami-Dade. A bike is a great tool here, and the ride to the beach is part of the workout.
Work and structure
Hallandale and its neighbors have work in retail, restaurants, hospitality, building maintenance for the condo towers, landscaping, marine work around the city marina and the Intracoastal, fitness and construction. CareerSource Broward offers free job search help and training. One honest note: Gulfstream Park, the racetrack and casino complex on US 1, is a well-known local landmark. For men whose history includes gambling, it’s worth steering clear.
At The Foundry, every resident is expected to be working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program (IOP counts) within the first couple of weeks. We help with resumes and interview practice.
What to look for in a men’s sober house
A sunrise is a great start. The house is what holds the rest of the day together. Look for:
- FARR certification. Florida’s voluntary certification for recovery residences is set out in Florida Statute 397.487; the credentialing body is the Florida Association of Recovery Residences.
- Enforced rules: no alcohol or drugs, a curfew, chores and required meetings. Our post on sober living rules has the detail.
- Randomized drug testing, on a schedule nobody can predict.
- Honest admissions that will tell you if a man needs a higher level of care.
- Men who show up for each other, including at 6 a.m. on the beach.
Meetings
South Broward has a full schedule of AA and NA meetings, and there are more just over the county line in Aventura and North Miami Beach. Use the official finders: AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search. Our guide to AA meetings in Hollywood covers the area just to the north.
For families
If you’re a parent or partner, it can help to know that a man in sober living near the beach is not on vacation. The days are structured: meetings, work, chores, curfew, testing. Ask any house you’re considering exactly what a day looks like. At The Foundry, new residents have an initial blackout period before visits. Al-Anon supports families of people with drinking problems, and our families page has more.
The Foundry: one house just north, one just south
Foundry: Beachhouse is at 701 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood, FL 33019, on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach. It has a rooftop terrace, a pool, ping pong, kayaks and a billiards room with a view of the water. From Hallandale Beach it’s usually 10 to 15 minutes by car. For a man who wants the beach life with real structure around it, it’s the natural fit. Our posts on Hollywood Beach and recovery and sober activities on the Broadwalk describe the area.

Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach, near Aventura and I-95. It’s a lakeside home with eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes, kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit, roughly 15 to 25 minutes south of Hallandale depending on traffic.

Both houses are FARR-certified, men-only, run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship, and built around the 12 steps. Rooms are furnished, and utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet are included. We give rides to meetings and appointments early on; residents in good standing may have a car. Most men stay three to twelve months. The Foundry is a recovery residence, not treatment or detox; a relapse leads to an honest conversation about the right level of care. It’s private pay, with scholarships for qualified men, and we discuss rates by phone.
