Early morning in northeast Miami-Dade, before the traffic on Biscayne Boulevard builds, the side streets are mostly birdsong and sprinklers. In Biscayne Park and El Portal, two tiny villages that each cover less than a square mile, that quiet lasts longer than it does almost anywhere else nearby. If you’re looking into sober living near Biscayne Park and El Portal, this is a guide to that stillness, and why it can be such a good friend to a man in early recovery.
A lot of men leave treatment with nerves still jangling. Sleep is uneven. The mind races. What helps, in my experience of years around recovery housing in South Florida, is not more stimulation but less: a slower day, a shaded walk, a regular bedtime, and people around you who are working the same program. This part of Miami offers the first few of those in quantity. A good men’s sober house supplies the rest.
A clear word before we go on: The Foundry does not have a house in Biscayne Park or El Portal. Our nearest house, Foundry: Lakehouse, is a short drive north in North Miami Beach. Our other house, Foundry: Beachhouse, is in Hollywood.
Two small villages and a river
Biscayne Park
The Village of Biscayne Park covers about two-thirds of a square mile, just north of Miami Shores, and the 2020 census counted 3,117 residents. It was first incorporated as a town at the end of 1931 and reincorporated as a village in 1933. Its best-known building is its village hall, a log cabin built by the Works Progress Administration from local pine and finished in January 1935. It still hosts commission meetings and community events. You can see a lot about a place from a building like that: modest, handmade, still in use after ninety years.
El Portal
El Portal is smaller still: about four-tenths of a square mile, between Miami Shores and the City of Miami, with 1,986 residents in 2020. It was incorporated in 1937, and its name is Spanish for “the gate,” after two wooden gates that once marked the village entrance. Wikipedia notes that the State of Florida has designated El Portal a bird sanctuary since the 1950s, and that a nature trail winds through the village. The Village of El Portal’s website lists the El Portal Nature Trail at 8650 NW 2nd Avenue.
El Portal also holds something very old. The Little River Mound, a small man-made mound in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood, is an ancient burial ground dating to about 600 AD, and it was the first archaeological site publicly recognized and preserved in Miami-Dade County. Treat it with the respect any burial ground deserves.
Little River
The Little River, the waterway, runs along the edge of this area, and the Miami neighborhood that takes its name sits just south of El Portal. Established in the late 1800s and absorbed into the City of Miami in 1925, Little River is a mix of homes, small farms and studios, and older industrial blocks. It’s more varied and busier than the two villages, but still a long way from the noise of downtown.
Sober living near Biscayne Park and El Portal: why stillness helps
Recovery has a loud start. There’s detox or treatment, then the move, then new rules, new faces, new meetings. Somewhere in the second or third week, a lot of men hit a wall of restlessness. That’s normal. The way through it is usually simple and slow.
- Walk the same route every morning. In a village this size, you can learn every street in a week. Repetition is calming.
- Get outside early. Morning light helps reset sleep that drugs and alcohol threw off.
- Notice things. The birds in El Portal, the old trees, the light on the water. Paying attention to small things is a kind of practice that helps a lot of men in the program.
- Keep the evenings quiet. A house curfew helps here, and so does a neighborhood with no bar strip.
We’ve written more about this in quiet sober living in South Florida and sleep, noise and downtime in sober living.
Places to slow down nearby
These are calm, free or cheap places within a short trip:
- The El Portal Nature Trail at 8650 NW 2nd Avenue.
- The streets of Biscayne Park themselves, shaded and residential, with the log-cabin village hall at their center.
- The Little River Branch Library of the Miami-Dade Public Library System at 160 NE 79th Street, a quiet place to read or look for work.
- The Cathedral of St. Mary in Little River, founded in 1929 as the Little River Mission Club, which Wikipedia describes as Miami’s only cathedral, with Mass in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. For men whose recovery has a spiritual side, it’s worth knowing about.
- Miami Shores, just to the south, with its library and bayfront park. Our Miami Shores sober living guide covers it.
Biscayne Park and El Portal ZIP codes
For such small places, the ZIP picture is simple but easy to misread. Biscayne Park is in 33161. El Portal is split between 33138 and 33150. All three ZIPs use “Miami, FL” as their preferred postal name and are shared with larger neighbors. We verified them against Wikipedia’s articles for Biscayne Park, El Portal and Little River, and against USPS-based listings at unitedstateszipcodes.org, which show the acceptable mailing names below.
| ZIP | Area it covers | Note for a man in recovery |
|---|---|---|
| 33161 | Biscayne Park, plus parts of Miami Shores and North Miami (all three are acceptable mailing names) | Shaded residential streets and the log-cabin village hall. Closest of these ZIPs to Foundry: Lakehouse. |
| 33138 | Part of El Portal (its village hall address is 33138), plus Miami’s Upper East Side and part of Little River (El Portal and Miami Shores are acceptable mailing names) | El Portal’s village hall is here. East of the villages, this ZIP reaches the busier Biscayne Boulevard corridor. |
| 33150 | The rest of El Portal (the nature trail address is 33150), plus Little River and nearby City of Miami neighborhoods (El Portal and Miami Shores are acceptable mailing names) | Home to the El Portal Nature Trail. More mixed and urban west and south of the village. |
The lesson: a “Miami” address in 33138 or 33150 might be in El Portal, Little River or another Miami neighborhood entirely. If you’re searching for sober living Biscayne Park FL or El Portal by ZIP, check the actual address on a map.
Getting around, slowly
Biscayne Boulevard (US 1) and NE 2nd Avenue are the main north–south routes here, with I-95 just to the west. Metrobus routes run along the main corridors; plan trips with Miami-Dade Transit. For a man without a car, a bicycle is a very good tool in this flat, shaded area, and in the first weeks a sober house that gives rides to meetings and appointments makes a real difference.
Work and structure
Stillness is good. Idleness isn’t. A quiet neighborhood works best when the days have a shape. Nearby, Biscayne Boulevard, North Miami and the Little River area have service, retail, landscaping, trade and warehouse jobs. CareerSource South Florida offers free help with job searches and training in Miami-Dade.
At The Foundry, residents are expected to be working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program (IOP counts) within the first couple of weeks. We help with resumes and interview practice.
What to look for in a men’s sober house
A peaceful street can’t do the work a house has to do. Look for these things:
- Certification. Florida’s voluntary certification for recovery residences is set out in Florida Statute 397.487, and the credentialing body is the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR).
- Enforced rules: no alcohol or drugs, a curfew, chores, required meetings.
- Randomized drug testing. Our post on drug testing in sober living explains why random matters.
- Honest admissions that tell you if the house isn’t the right level of care.
- A calm house, not just a calm street: reasonable occupancy, quiet hours, and men who take the program seriously.
Meetings
Northeast Miami-Dade has a full schedule of AA and NA meetings. Look them up with AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search. Find a home group, get a sponsor, and show up. Quiet days are good; days with a meeting in them are better.
For families
If you’re a parent or partner, it can be reassuring to picture your son or husband somewhere this peaceful. Just remember that the house’s structure matters more than the scenery. Ask about testing, curfew and how relapse is handled. Expect an initial blackout period before visits; at The Foundry, that’s standard for new residents. Al-Anon offers support for families, and our families page has more.
The Foundry: the closest house is a short drive north
Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach, near Aventura and I-95, and it suits the same temperament as these villages. It’s a lakeside home with eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes and kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit. From Biscayne Park it’s usually 15 to 20 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Our North Miami Beach sober living guide covers the neighborhood.

Foundry: Beachhouse is at 701 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood, on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach, with a rooftop terrace, a pool and kayaks. It’s roughly 25 to 35 minutes north.

Both are FARR-certified, men-only houses run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship and built around the 12 steps. The rules are clear: no alcohol or drugs, randomized testing, curfew, meetings, chores, and work, school, volunteering or an outpatient program. Rooms are furnished; utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet are included. Most men stay three to twelve months. The Foundry is a recovery residence, not treatment or detox. It’s private pay, with scholarships for qualified men, and we discuss rates by phone.
