Ask men in their first months of sobriety when it gets hard, and a lot of them won’t say Monday morning. They’ll say Saturday afternoon. The work week has a shape. The weekend doesn’t, unless you give it one. So this guide to sober living in North Miami is built around a weekend: a full sober Saturday and Sunday in the city, from the first cup of coffee to curfew, with the practical stuff about houses, ZIP codes, work and family folded in along the way.
A quick note on where we stand. The Foundry runs two FARR-certified men’s sober living houses, and neither is inside North Miami. Foundry: Lakehouse is next door in North Miami Beach, roughly 10 to 20 minutes from most of North Miami depending on traffic. Foundry: Beachhouse is in Hollywood, roughly 20 to 30 minutes north. Either one puts every stop on this itinerary within easy reach for a man looking at sober living North Miami FL options.
Before the weekend: know the city
North Miami sits in northeastern Miami-Dade County, between Miami Shores and North Miami Beach, with Biscayne Bay on its eastern side. It began as a town in 1926 and incorporated as a city in 1953, and the 2020 census counted 60,191 residents across about ten square miles, roughly a sixth of it water. Biscayne Boulevard, NE 125th Street and NE 135th Street are the main roads you’ll use.
One thing to plan around: the city’s free NoMi Express trolley runs four routes Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and doesn’t run on weekends. On Saturday and Sunday you’ll be on county buses, a bike, your feet, or a house ride. At The Foundry, men get rides to meetings and appointments early on, and residents in good standing may have a car later.
Saturday
7:00 a.m. Up, bed made, coffee
Get up at the same time you do on weekdays. That one habit protects the whole weekend. Make the bed, do your chore, and eat something real. In a structured house, Saturday chores are part of the deal anyway.
8:00 a.m. A morning meeting
Start the day in a room with other men in recovery. There are weekend morning meetings across northeast Miami-Dade, but times change, so look them up the night before on AA’s meeting finder or NA’s meeting search. Our guide to AA and NA meetings in Miami explains how to settle on a home group. The Foundry is built on the twelve steps, so meetings and a sponsor aren’t optional, and Saturday is a good day to call yours.
10:00 a.m. Oleta River State Park
This is the big one. Oleta River State Park covers 1,043 acres on Biscayne Bay and is described by the state as Florida’s largest urban park. It sits on North Miami’s eastern edge, beside Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus (the park’s street address carries a North Miami Beach ZIP). The draws: around 14 to 15 miles of off-road mountain bike trails, paddling through the river and mangroves, fishing, picnicking along the bay and wildlife watching. Check the park page for entry fees and hours before you go.
A long ride or a paddle is the best thing I know for a busy head. You come back tired in the right way.
1:00 p.m. Lunch and a reset
Eat with someone from the house if you can. Then take an hour. Shower, rest, read. Early recovery wears men out more than they expect, and a tired man makes worse choices. We wrote about this in sleep, noise and downtime in sober living.
3:00 p.m. Arch Creek Park
Arch Creek Park is an eight-acre site at NE 135th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, with a nature center and museum and a preserved archaeological site. It’s small, shaded and quiet: a good place to walk and think without spending money. If the nature center is open, go in; confirm hours ahead.
5:00 p.m. Exercise or service
Late Saturday afternoon is the classic danger window. Fill it. Go for a run, lift, play pickup ball, or show up early to set up chairs at an evening meeting. Service is a cure for self-pity.
7:00 p.m. Dinner with the house, then an evening meeting
A Saturday-night meeting gives the evening a center. Go. Afterward, coffee with a couple of guys is the sober version of a night out.
Curfew
Back by curfew, no exceptions. Phone on the charger, not in your hand.
Sunday
7:30 a.m. Slow start, same alarm
Sunday can be a little slower. It shouldn’t be shapeless. Up at a reasonable hour, chore done, a few minutes of reading or prayer if that’s part of your program.
9:00 a.m. Enchanted Forest Elaine Gordon Park
At 1725 NE 135th Street, this 22-acre city park follows Arch Creek, with tree canopy, native plants, community and butterfly gardens, horse stables, open fields, picnic areas and a paved walking trail. Walk the loop. It’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of Miami-Dade.
11:00 a.m. Art and quiet
North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art sits in the heart of the city’s downtown, in a building designed by architect Charles Gwathmey. A museum is one of the most underrated sober outings there is: quiet, interesting, and nobody is pushing a drink on you. Check opening days and admission before you go. The North Miami Public Library, which has stayed independent of the county system, is another quiet option on days it’s open.
1:00 p.m. Family time, if you’re there yet
New residents at The Foundry have an initial blackout period before visits. Once that passes, Sunday afternoon is a natural time to see family. Keep it simple: a walk in one of these parks, lunch, an honest conversation. Families, our family guide explains how visits work, and Al-Anon meets across Miami-Dade for your own support.
4:00 p.m. Plan the week
This is the step most men skip. Sit down for twenty minutes. Write out work shifts or IOP sessions, meetings, sponsor calls, appointments and rides. A man who knows what Monday looks like on Sunday night sleeps better.
6:00 p.m. Sunday dinner and a meeting
Close the weekend the way you opened it, around other sober men. Then home before curfew.

North Miami ZIP codes
North Miami uses four residential ZIP codes: 33161, 33167, 33168 and 33181. I checked them against the city’s Wikipedia entry and against two USPS-based directories, zip-codes.com and unitedstateszipcodes.org. All four carry “Miami” as the primary postal name, with North Miami accepted as an alternate, and all four extend beyond the city limits. Wikipedia’s infobox also lists 33160 with a North Miami Beach label; that ZIP is mainly North Miami Beach, Sunny Isles Beach and Aventura, so it’s left out here.
| ZIP | Area it covers | Weekend note for a man in recovery |
|---|---|---|
| 33161 | Parts of North Miami; also accepted for Biscayne Park and Miami Shores | Shares its edges with quiet residential villages to the south. Good walking streets. |
| 33167 | Parts of North Miami and neighboring areas; Miami Shores also accepted | Largely residential. Check bus connections before relying on weekend transit. |
| 33168 | Parts of North Miami and neighboring unincorporated areas | Residential. Weekend trips east to the parks are easier with a ride or bike. |
| 33181 | Parts of North Miami toward the bay; North Miami Beach also accepted | Enchanted Forest Elaine Gordon Park’s address is in this ZIP. Closest of the four to the Lakehouse. |

The weekday side: work and structure
A good weekend depends on a good week. At The Foundry, every resident is working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program (IOP counts) within his first couple of weeks, and we help with resumes and interviews. Around North Miami, first jobs often come from restaurants and retail along Biscayne Boulevard, campus and service work, maintenance, landscaping and trades. CareerSource South Florida provides free job-search help. During the week, the NoMi Express trolley is a free way to get around the city.
Choosing sober living in North Miami: the house matters most
All the weekend planning in the world won’t help in the wrong house. Whatever you look at, check four things:
- Certification. Florida certifies recovery residences under section 397.487 of the Florida Statutes, through the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR). Ask to see it, then verify it on FARR’s site.
- Rules that are enforced. No alcohol or drugs, randomized drug testing, curfew, chores and required meetings, with clear consequences.
- Who’s in charge. Foundry houses are run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship.
- Honest admissions. Sober living is housing, not treatment or detox. A good house tells you when you need more care first.
A men’s sober living house also changes the weekend. Saturday nights with a houseful of sober men look very different from Saturday nights alone.

The Foundry’s houses
Foundry: Lakehouse, 871 NE 182nd Terrace, North Miami Beach: lakeside, eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes and kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit, near Aventura and I-95. For a man whose job, IOP or family is in North Miami, it’s the obvious fit. Our North Miami Beach sober living guide covers the neighborhood.
Foundry: Beachhouse, 701 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood: on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach, with a rooftop terrace, pool, ping pong, kayaks and a billiards room looking out on the water. Better for a man who wants more distance.
Rooms are furnished, and utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet are included. Sober living is private pay, with scholarships for qualified men; we share rates on a call. Most men stay three to twelve months. If a man relapses, we have an honest conversation about the right level of care.
