Sober Living in Doral: ZIP-by-ZIP Field Notes for Men in Recovery

Doral, FLJune 20268 min readBy Richard RibacoffHeader photo: Kevin Torres / Unsplash

These are field notes on sober living in Doral, organized the way I’d organize a survey: boundaries first, then the ZIP codes one at a time, then transit, work, open space and the house itself. Doral is a city that rewards that approach. It’s young, fast-growing and laid out on a grid between two expressways, and most of what a man in early recovery needs to know about it can be written down as plain facts. Where I couldn’t verify something, it isn’t here.

One fact before the survey: The Foundry does not have a house in Doral. Our two FARR-certified men’s sober living homes are Foundry: Lakehouse in North Miami Beach and Foundry: Beachhouse in Hollywood. Distances are in the last section.

Survey baseline: Doral at a glance

  • Incorporated: June 24, 2003, which makes it one of the newest cities in Miami-Dade County.
  • Population: 75,874 at the 2020 census, up from 45,704 in 2010, per Wikipedia.
  • Boundaries: the Palmetto Expressway forms the eastern edge, Florida’s Turnpike the western edge, and the Dolphin Expressway part of the southern edge.
  • North neighbor: the Town of Medley, incorporated in 1949, with a 2020 population of about 1,056 and an economy built on industry, including cement and aggregate plants.
  • East neighbor: Miami International Airport, about five miles from the city.
  • Character: a mix of warehouses and logistics, corporate offices, golf, shopping and newer residential neighborhoods. Wikipedia lists Carnival Corporation and Univision among its larger employers, and U.S. Southern Command is headquartered here.
  • Government: the City of Doral publishes parks, trolley and city services information at cityofdoral.com.

Survey note: Doral is a place where a lot of people work and a growing number live. For a man in recovery, that combination is useful. The jobs are close, the streets are newer and mostly residential or commercial, and the city has put real money into parks and free transit.

Doral ZIP codes: the summary table

Five ZIP codes appear for Doral in both Wikipedia’s city article and the zip-codes.com directory: 33122, 33126, 33166, 33172 and 33178. Two caveats belong at the top of the page. First, the directory treats “Doral” as an alias of the Miami postal name, so you will see the same addresses written as “Miami, FL”. Second, several of these ZIPs extend well beyond city limits, into Medley, Miami Springs, Sweetwater and unincorporated county. The population figures below are 2020 census counts for the whole ZIP, as reported by zip-codes.com, not counts of Doral residents.

ZIPArea it coversNote for a man in recovery
33122A small ZIP in the Doral area with few residents (about 2,100 in the whole ZIP)Few homes; more likely a place to work than to live.
33126A portion of Doral; most of this ZIP lies outside the city (about 48,800 in the ZIP)Check which city a specific address is actually in before assuming it’s Doral.
33166North-central Doral, around NW 53rd Street; shared with Medley and nearby areas (about 26,100 in the ZIP)The Doral library branch is here. Close to Palmetto Metrorail Station and industrial employers.
33172Southern Doral, around NW 12th Street; extends beyond the city (about 43,900 in the ZIP)The International Mall library branch is here. Retail jobs and bus connections.
33178Northern and western Doral; also used by Medley (about 65,500 in the ZIP, the largest of the five)Largely residential. Quieter, and more car-dependent.

Cross-reference: zip-codes.com also tags 33182 and a few non-residential ZIPs with the Doral alias. Wikipedia does not list them for the city, so they’re left off this table. For the whole county, see our Miami-Dade ZIP code guide to sober living.

Field notes, ZIP by ZIP

Method: each entry below records what the public sources show (population, landmarks, library branches, transit) and then a short “recovery angle,” meaning what that ZIP is likely to be good for in a man’s first months sober: a place to live, a place to work, or a place to spend free time well. Entries are ordered by how often men in recovery are likely to interact with each ZIP, not numerically.

33166: the working north side

Observed: industrial and commercial streets, office parks, and the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Doral Branch at 8551 NW 53rd Street. The ZIP crosses into Medley, whose motto is literally about industrial development. Recovery angle: if a man needs a warehouse, delivery or driving job quickly, this is where many of them are. Palmetto Metrorail Station, the northern end of the Green Line at 7701 NW 79th Avenue, sits just outside Doral near Medley and opened in 2003.

33178: the populous north and west

Observed: the most populous of Doral’s ZIPs by 2020 census count, shared with Medley, with a lot of residential streets. Recovery angle: quieter streets and newer housing, but distances are longer, so a man without a car will lean on the trolley, a bike or rides.

33172: the south side and the mall

Observed: the International Mall Branch library at 10315 NW 12th Street, retail, and access to the Dolphin Expressway. Recovery angle: retail and food-service jobs, a public library for job applications and a cool place to spend an afternoon.

33126: the shared ZIP

Observed: a large ZIP by population, most of it outside Doral. Recovery angle: confirm the city on any address before assuming it’s Doral.

33122: the small one

Observed: a small resident count, about 2,100 at the 2020 census. Recovery angle: more likely a place to work than to live. Few men will live here; many may work here.

Transit log: moving around without a car

  • Doral Trolley. A free city service launched in 2008, now running four routes: Route 1 Crosstown Connector, Routes 2 and 3 as Metrorail connectors, and Route 4 to FIU. Weekday service on most routes starts around 6 a.m.; Sunday service runs only on Route 1. Current schedules are on the city’s trolley page.
  • Freebee. The city added on-demand electric rides in 2019.
  • Metrorail. Palmetto Station, reached by trolley or bus, links to the rest of the system.
  • Metrobus. County routes cover the main corridors. Plan trips with Miami-Dade Transit’s online trip planner.

Survey note: the trolley does not run every route on weekends, and the expressways that border the city are not built for pedestrians. A man in his first weeks will do better with a planned route than with a hopeful one. At The Foundry, we drive new residents to meetings and appointments while they get established.

Open-space log: where sober time goes

  • Doral Central Park, 3000 NW 87th Avenue. At 82 acres, it’s the city’s largest park, with a 0.9-mile walking and jogging path, lake views and an exercise station. Open weekdays 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 7 a.m. to sunset, per the city’s park page.
  • Other city parks, including Doral Glades Park, Legacy Park and Downtown Doral Park.
  • Two library branches (Doral and International Mall), noted above.

Field observation, not data: men in early recovery who walk or run a measured loop every day, the same loop, at the same time, tend to build the habit faster than men who wait for motivation. A 0.9-mile path is a good unit to count in.

Employment log

Doral’s economy is the most practical thing about it for a man in recovery. Air cargo, freight forwarding, import and export, warehousing, corporate offices, retail and food service are all here, and many are reachable by trolley. At The Foundry, every resident is working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program within the first couple of weeks, and we help with resumes and interviews. Meeting log

Meetings across western Miami-Dade change often enough that I won’t list them. Use the official finders: AA and NA. The Foundry is built around the twelve steps; residents attend meetings, work with a sponsor and stay involved in the fellowship.

Family notes

For families: new residents have an initial blackout period before visits, and a relapse leads to an honest conversation about the right level of care. Our family page covers the rest, and Al-Anon supports the people who love someone in recovery.
