The short answers first
Does The Foundry have a sober house in Coral Gables?
No. The Foundry runs two FARR-certified men’s sober living houses, and neither is in the Gables. Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach, near Aventura and I-95. Foundry: Beachhouse is at 701 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood, on the Intracoastal Waterway in Broward County. We’d rather tell you that in the first paragraph than in the last.
How far are they from Coral Gables?
By car, the Lakehouse is roughly 35 to 50 minutes from central Coral Gables, and the Beachhouse roughly 40 to 55 minutes, depending heavily on I-95 traffic. Use the maps at the end of this page for live routes.
So why would a Coral Gables man look at The Foundry?
Two reasons come up most. Some men want structure that’s still within reach of family, an outpatient program or a job in Miami-Dade. Others want real distance from the friends, bars and routines they had at home, and a 45-minute drive is a useful buffer. Both are legitimate. What matters more is that the house runs a real program.
Questions about Coral Gables itself
What is Coral Gables like for a man in early recovery?
Planned, green and orderly. The city was developed by George Merrick during the 1920s Florida land boom and incorporated on April 29, 1925. Its Mediterranean Revival architecture, tree canopy and strict design rules are still the first thing visitors notice. The 2020 census counted about 49,200 residents. The University of Miami is in the Gables and is the city’s largest employer. Miracle Mile and the surrounding downtown are the commercial center. For early recovery, that adds up to a calm, walkable, well-kept environment with a lot of daytime structure around it.
Is there nightlife to watch out for?
There’s a restaurant and bar scene downtown and near the university, as you’d expect in a city with a large campus. It isn’t a nightlife district in the way parts of Miami Beach are, but a man in his first months should still plan evenings around meetings, the house and the gym rather than around dinner out with the old crowd.
Can you get around Coral Gables without a car?
Yes, better than most of the county. The city runs a free trolley Monday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Ponce de Leon route runs along Ponce de Leon Boulevard between Douglas Road Metrorail Station and Flagler Street, and the Grand Avenue route runs from the same station. In late 2025 the city also launched a one-year Southern Loop pilot toward the University of Miami and Red Road; check whether it’s still operating. Details and live tracking are on the city’s trolley page.
Metrorail serves the area at University Station and at Douglas Road Station on US 1. Douglas Road has a Coral Gables mailing address but technically sits just inside the City of Miami line. Both Green Line and Orange Line trains stop there.
Where does a sober man spend a free afternoon in the Gables?
- Venetian Pool. Built in 1924 from an abandoned limestone quarry and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only swimming pool on the register. Check the city for hours and admission.
- Matheson Hammock Park. A Miami-Dade County park on Biscayne Bay with a tidal atoll pool, a marina and hammock forest. See the county’s Matheson Hammock page for hours.
- The library. The Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Coral Gables Branch is at 3443 Segovia Street, and the system has also listed a temporary location on Miracle Mile, so confirm which is open before you go.
- Walking the streets. The Gables is one of the best places in the county for a long, shaded walk. A daily walk is cheap therapy.
Coral Gables ZIP codes
What ZIP codes cover Coral Gables?
Seven ZIP codes appear in both Wikipedia’s article on the city and the directory at zip-codes.com: 33133, 33134, 33143, 33144, 33146, 33156 and 33158. The catch is that almost every one of them is shared with a neighbor. Coral Gables is surrounded by the City of Miami, South Miami, Pinecrest and unincorporated county, and its ZIPs spill across those lines. A “Coral Gables” address doesn’t always mean the City of Coral Gables, and vice versa.
| ZIP | Area it covers | Practical note for recovery |
|---|---|---|
| 33134 | The northern Gables, including downtown and Miracle Mile | The city’s main contact address and the Coral Gables library branch both use 33134. Closest to the trolley’s Ponce de Leon corridor. |
| 33146 | The central Gables, including the University of Miami area | Near University Metrorail Station and US 1. Good for men going back to school. |
| 33133 | The eastern edge of the Gables; mostly shared with Coconut Grove in the City of Miami | Close to Douglas Road Station and the bayfront. |
| 33143 | Southern parts of the Gables; shared with South Miami and nearby areas | Near US 1 and the Metrorail corridor. |
| 33144 | A western slice of the Gables; shared with neighboring areas to the west | More residential and car-dependent; check bus routes before committing. |
| 33156 | The southern Gables; shared with Pinecrest and nearby areas | Residential and leafy; you’ll want a bike or a ride. |
| 33158 | A small slice at the southern end; mostly used by neighboring communities | Quiet and car-dependent. |
Why do different websites list different ZIPs?
Because they count differently. Wikipedia also lists 33155, and zip-codes.com also lists 33145 plus a few P.O. box and single-organization ZIPs. Those mostly cover neighboring areas or have no residential delivery, so we’ve left them out of the table. If a specific address matters, check it on the USPS lookup. Our Miami-Dade ZIP code guide covers the whole county.
Questions about the house
What should I look for in a men’s sober house near Coral Gables?
Five things, in this order:
- Certification. Florida’s voluntary certification for recovery residences is in section 397.487, Florida Statutes. The credentialing body is the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR). Ask for the certificate. Read what FARR certification means.
- Enforced rules. No alcohol or drugs, a curfew, chores, required meetings. Ask what happens when someone breaks one.
- Randomized drug testing. Not scheduled, not optional.
- Honest admissions. A good house tells you when a man needs detox or treatment first. If you’re unsure which level of care fits, read treatment vs. sober living.
- Who runs it. At The Foundry, the houses are run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship.
Is sober living the same as treatment?
No. The Foundry is a recovery residence, not treatment and not detox. It’s housing with structure and accountability. Many men live with us while attending an outpatient program, which counts toward the daytime commitment. If you’re new to the idea, start with what sober living is.
What are the rules at The Foundry?
No alcohol or drugs. Randomized drug testing. Curfew. Required meetings. Chores. And within the first couple of weeks, a resident is working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program. We help with resumes and interviews.
What about meetings?
The Foundry is built around the twelve steps: meetings, a sponsor, step work. The Gables and the surrounding parts of Miami-Dade have plenty of meetings. Use AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search for current listings. Early on, we drive residents to meetings and appointments.

What about work?
Coral Gables is an office and services town: the university, corporate offices, retail and restaurants along Miracle Mile and Ponce, and a lot of professional services. A man who was working in the Gables before treatment may be able to keep that job while living with us, depending on the commute and his schedule. CareerSource South Florida offers free job-search help across Miami-Dade.
What does it cost?
We don’t publish prices. Rates depend on the room and are given on a call. What’s included: a furnished room, utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet. Sober living is private pay, and scholarships are available for qualified men. For how to compare houses on cost, see the cost of sober living in Miami.
How long do men stay?
Most men stay three to twelve months.
Can he keep his car?
Residents in good standing may have a car. Early on, we provide rides.
Which house fits a Coral Gables man better?
If his family, outpatient program or job is in Miami-Dade, the Lakehouse is usually the practical choice: a lakeside home with eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes and kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit, near I-95. If he needs a county line between himself and home, the Beachhouse in Hollywood has a rooftop terrace, a pool, ping pong, kayaks and a billiards room looking out on the Intracoastal.
