Sober Living in Kendall: Myths, Facts and the Kendall FL ZIP Codes

Kendall, FLJune 202611 min readBy Richard RibacoffHeader photo: E Mens / Unsplash

People searching for sober living in Kendall, FL, usually show up with a head full of assumptions. Some come from a treatment counselor, some from a cousin who “did a halfway house once,” and plenty from the internet. A lot of it is wrong. Some of it is wrong in ways that cost men their sobriety.

So this guide does something a little different. I’m going to take the things I hear most often about men’s sober living, put each one next to what is actually true, and be blunt about it. Along the way you’ll get the Kendall ZIP codes, the transit, the parks and libraries worth knowing, and an honest picture of where The Foundry fits. I’m Richard. I’ve spent years around recovery housing in South Florida, and I would rather you hear the plain version now than learn it the hard way.

First, the plainest fact of all: The Foundry does not have a house in Kendall. Our two men’s houses are in North Miami Beach and Hollywood. More on that, and on whether the distance helps or hurts, below.

Kendall in one paragraph

Kendall is not a city. It’s an unincorporated part of Miami-Dade County, which means the county, not a city hall, runs the services. The census-designated place called Kendall had 80,241 residents in 2020, and it sits about 14 miles southwest of downtown Miami, roughly between U.S. 1 on the east and the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike on the west, with the Don Shula Expressway (State Road 874) cutting across it. When people say “Kendall” they usually mean more than that: Kendall West, The Hammocks and Kendale Lakes are separate census areas to the west, and together they hold well over 150,000 more people. The name goes back to Henry John Broughton Kendall, a director of the land company that bought much of the area from the state in 1883. Today it is big, suburban, family-heavy and car-oriented, with Dadeland Mall and Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus (opened in 1967) as two of its anchors.

Myth: “Sober living is basically cheap rehab.”

Fact: Sober living is housing. It is not treatment and it is not detox. A recovery residence gives a man a drug- and alcohol-free place to live, rules, accountability and a house full of other men doing the same work. It does not give him a therapist, a doctor or medication management. If someone still needs detox or clinical care, a good house tells him so before he moves in. Licensed providers can be searched on the federal FindTreatment.gov directory, and read our breakdown of treatment vs. sober living if the line still feels blurry.

Plenty of men do both at once: they live in a sober house and attend an intensive outpatient program (IOP) during the day. That combination is common, and at The Foundry an IOP counts toward the daytime commitment every resident needs.

Myth: “Every sober house in Florida is licensed and inspected.”

Fact: Florida’s system for recovery residences is voluntary. Under section 397.487 of the Florida Statutes, the state recognizes a credentialing body, the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR), which certifies houses that meet its standards. A house can operate without that certification. The difference matters because licensed treatment providers in Florida are generally limited in which residences they can refer patients to, and because certification means someone outside the house has actually checked it.

So don’t take “we’re certified” on faith. Ask to see it, then look the house up yourself. Both Foundry houses are FARR-certified. Our explainer on FARR-accredited sober living walks through what the certification does and doesn’t cover.

Myth: “Rules are for people who can’t handle freedom.”

Fact: Rules are why the house works. Every man in a sober house is relying on every other man staying sober. One person using puts the whole house at risk. The rules you should expect in any serious men’s sober living home:

  • No alcohol or drugs, on or off the property.
  • Randomized drug testing. Scheduled tests are easy to game. Random ones aren’t.
  • A curfew, especially early on.
  • Required meetings and a sponsor.
  • Chores, because adults clean up after themselves.
  • A daytime commitment: work, school, volunteering or an outpatient program.

The real question isn’t whether a house has rules. It’s whether it enforces them, every time, for everyone. Ask what happened the last time someone broke one. If the answer is vague, that tells you something. Our full list of sober living rules goes deeper, including how testing works.

Myth: “Testing means they don’t trust you.”

Fact: Testing is how trust gets built. Early in recovery, nobody’s word carries much weight, including yours, and that’s not an insult. A clean test result is evidence. Stack up enough of them and you have a record nobody can argue with: not your family, not your employer, not the voice in your own head. Men who are doing the work generally stop resenting the cup pretty quickly.

Myth: “You can’t live in Kendall without a car.”

Fact: It’s harder, not impossible. Kendall was built around the car, and the western neighborhoods especially are long blocks of houses and strip centers. But there are real options:

  • Metrorail has two stations on Kendall’s eastern edge along U.S. 1: Dadeland North and Dadeland South. Dadeland South is the southern end of the line.
  • The South Dade TransitWay, a bus rapid transit corridor of roughly 20 miles, starts at Dadeland South and runs south to Florida City.
  • Metrobus covers the major roads east to west.
  • The Underline, a linear park and trail planned for 10 miles beneath the Metrorail tracks, is being built out toward Dadeland South, with the final segment scheduled for completion in 2026.

Plan trips through Miami-Dade Transit. The practical truth is that a man without a car in West Kendall or The Hammocks will spend a lot of time on buses. That’s one reason The Foundry gives new residents rides to meetings and appointments while they get on their feet, and why residents in good standing may have a car later on.

Myth: “There’s nothing to do sober out in the suburbs.”

Fact: There’s plenty. You just won’t trip over it the way you would in Brickell. A few places I’d actually send a man:

  • Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, a Miami-Dade County park with three 18-hole disc golf courses, a skate plaza, an outdoor fitness zone, lighted softball fields and a 32-acre nature preserve. Disc golf is cheap, social, and gets you outside for two hours. That’s a win.
  • The public libraries. The Kendall Branch (9101 SW 97th Avenue), the Sunset Branch (SW 72nd Street), the Kendale Lakes Branch (15205 SW 88th Street) and West Kendall Regional (10201 Hammocks Boulevard) all have free Wi-Fi, computers and quiet. A library is where a resume gets written.
  • Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus. Going back to school counts as structure. So does a single class.
  • The Kenwoods Hammock, a native forest planting near Kenwood K-8 Center that has become a known stop for bird watchers.

Boredom is a real relapse risk. Fill the hours on purpose.

Myth: “Meetings are a city thing.”

Fact: South Miami-Dade has meetings throughout the day and evening, in English and Spanish. I won’t list times, because they change. Use the official finders: AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search. Our guide to AA and NA meetings in Miami covers how to find a home group and why it matters. The Foundry is built around the twelve steps: residents go to meetings, get a sponsor, and work with one.

Myth: “I should stay close to home so I don’t lose my life.”

Fact: Sometimes. And sometimes “close to home” means close to the same apartment complex, the same friends and the same dealer. Only you know which is true for you. Here’s how I’d think about it:

  • If your job, your outpatient program or your kids are in Kendall and the people you used with aren’t, staying close has real advantages.
  • If every road in Kendall leads past somebody you used with, a little distance can be the best thing that happens to you.
  • Either way, being 45 minutes from home doesn’t mean being cut off. It means visits and calls happen on purpose instead of by accident.

That’s the honest case for The Foundry if you’re from Kendall. Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach, near Aventura and I-95. From central Kendall it’s roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic. Foundry: Beachhouse, at 701 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood, is on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach, and it’s a little further, often closer to an hour or more at rush hour. Use the maps at the bottom for live routes. Far enough to break routines. Close enough for family to visit once the initial blackout period is over.

Myth: “I’ll get a job once I’m settled.”

Fact: Getting a job is how you get settled. At The Foundry, every resident is expected to be working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program within the first couple of weeks, and we help with resumes and interviews. Around Dadeland and along Kendall’s main commercial corridors, the first jobs men tend to find are in retail, restaurants, auto service and the trades work that keeps a big suburb running. CareerSource South Florida offers free job-search help in Miami-Dade. A first job in recovery doesn’t need to be a career. It needs to get you up in the morning.

Myth: “If I slip, I’m out on the street.”

Fact: Using in a sober house has consequences, and it should. But at The Foundry, a relapse leads to an honest conversation about the right level of care, whether that’s detox, treatment or something else. The goal is getting a man to the help he needs, not just getting him out the door. Ask any house what their relapse policy is before you sign anything.

Kendall ZIP codes

Here’s the thing about a Kendall FL ZIP code: there isn’t really one. Kendall isn’t a city, so the post office files almost all of it under “Miami.” Wikipedia lists five ZIP codes for the Kendall census area itself (33156, 33173, 33176, 33183 and 33186), and the neighborhoods to the west add a few more. USPS-based ZIP directories accept “Kendall” as an alternate city name for some of them, such as 33156 and 33183, but the preferred name is Miami. Several of these ZIPs also cross into Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and other neighboring communities, so treat the area descriptions below as general, not as exact boundaries.

Myth: “This is his problem. Families should stay out of it.”

Fact: Families are part of the picture whether anyone likes it or not. What changes in sober living is the role. You stop managing his recovery and start taking care of your own. Al-Anon exists for exactly that, and our page for families explains how visits, calls and boundaries work at The Foundry. New residents have an initial blackout period before visits. It’s there for a reason, and most families end up grateful for it.

Myth: “All sober houses are pretty much the same.”

Fact: They are not. Here’s what The Foundry actually is, nothing more and nothing less:

  • Two FARR-certified, men-only sober living houses, run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship.
  • Furnished rooms, with utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet included.
  • Private pay, with scholarships for qualified men. We give rates on the phone, not online, and we don’t publish bed availability because it changes.
  • Most men stay three to twelve months.

If you want the case for a men-only house specifically, read why men-only sober living works differently.

Sober living in Kendall: the bottom line

Men’s sober living for someone from Kendall comes down to a few honest questions. Is the house certified? Are the rules enforced? Will they tell you no if you need more care? And do you need to be near home, or away from it for a while? Answer those and the decision gets a lot simpler. Call The Foundry at (954) 817-7143 or start on our admissions page. Ask us the hard questions. We’d rather you did.
