Sober Living in Miami Gardens: A Men’s Game Plan for the First Season

Sit down for a minute. If you’re reading about sober living in Miami Gardens, you’re either the guy who just finished treatment or the person who loves him. Either way, you’re in the right room.

I’m not going to sell you anything here. I’m going to give you a game plan. I’ve spent years around men’s sober living in South Florida, and the men who make it aren’t the most talented. They’re the ones who show up, follow the plan and keep showing up.

Miami Gardens is a big home field. The city covers about 19 square miles of northern Miami-Dade County, and the 2020 census counted 111,640 people. It’s young as cities go, incorporated in 2003. Most of it is neighborhoods: houses, churches, schools, ball fields. That’s good terrain for a man rebuilding his days.

First, the honest call. The Foundry doesn’t have a house inside Miami Gardens. Our Foundry: Lakehouse is in North Miami Beach, roughly 15 to 25 minutes east of most of the city depending on traffic. Our Foundry: Beachhouse is in Hollywood, roughly 20 to 30 minutes north and east. Both are close enough to keep family and work in reach. Both are far enough to get you off your old block. If you’ve been searching “sober living Miami Gardens FL,” that’s the trade-off to weigh.

Know your home field

You don’t walk into a game without studying the field. Here’s the film on Miami Gardens.

The landmark everyone knows. Hard Rock Stadium sits in Miami Gardens. It’s home to the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes, hosts the Orange Bowl and the Miami Open tennis tournament, and since 2022 has hosted the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. Big crowds, big tailgates. Know that going in. Game days are not where a man in his first season should be testing himself.

The boundaries. I-95 forms the city’s eastern edge. State Road 860, Miami Gardens Drive, gives the city its name. NW 27th Avenue runs north and south through the middle, and City Hall’s contact address is on it, at 18605 NW 27th Avenue.

The schools. Florida Memorial University and St. Thomas University are both in the city. That matters if you’re thinking about going back to school. Plenty of men use their sober living months to finish what they started.

The library. The North Dade Regional Library, part of the Miami-Dade Public Library system, has served the area since 1979. Free Wi-Fi, computers, quiet. A library is a resume office that doesn’t charge you.

Rule one: pick the right sober living for Miami Gardens men

A sober house is your locker room. The culture in that room decides more than the address does. Here is what I’d demand from any men’s sober living home, ours included.

Certification you can check

Florida has a voluntary certification system for recovery residences under section 397.487 of the Florida Statutes. The credentialing body is the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR). Ask to see the certificate. Then look the house up yourself. Trust, then verify. That’s not rude. That’s smart.

Rules with teeth

No alcohol. No drugs. Randomized drug testing. A curfew. Chores. Meetings. A daytime commitment. Every house says it has rules. Ask what happens when somebody breaks one. If the answer is vague, the rules are decoration. Our breakdowns of sober living rules and drug testing in sober living show what real enforcement looks like.

Coaches who’ve played

Find out who runs the house and who picks up the phone at 2 a.m. At The Foundry, the houses are run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship. They’ve sat where you’re sitting.

An honest intake

A good house will tell you no if you need something else first. Sober living is housing, not treatment and not detox. If you still need clinical care, a straight-shooting house says so. The federal FindTreatment.gov directory lists licensed providers.

A men’s locker room

Both Foundry houses are men-only. In a men’s sober living house, guys tend to drop the act faster. Less posturing. More honesty. That’s where the work gets done.

Miami Gardens ZIP codes

Here’s the roster. I checked these against the city’s Wikipedia entry and against USPS-based ZIP directories (zip-codes.com and unitedstateszipcodes.org). Two things to know. First, several of these ZIPs cross city lines, so a Miami Gardens ZIP doesn’t guarantee a Miami Gardens address. Second, the post office name on the envelope is often not “Miami Gardens.” Some carry Opa-locka, Hialeah or Miami as the primary postal name, with Miami Gardens accepted as an alternate.

Practice schedule: build the day

Talent doesn’t win the first season. Schedule does. Idle hours are where relapse starts making its case.

At The Foundry, every man is working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program, and IOP counts, within his first couple of weeks. Add meetings, chores and curfew, and the day fills up. That’s the point.

Here’s what a solid week looks like for a man from Miami Gardens:

  • Mornings: up on time, bed made, chore done, out the door.
  • Daytime: work, IOP, school or volunteering. No exceptions without a reason.
  • Late afternoon: a workout. Lift, run, shoot hoops, swim.
  • Evening: a meeting, a call with your sponsor, dinner with the house.
  • Night: back by curfew. Phone down. Sleep.

Boring? Good. Boring is what winning looks like in month one. Our post on the first 30 days of sober living walks through it week by week.

Your training facilities

You need places to sweat that don’t serve drinks. Miami Gardens has them.

  • Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, 3000 NW 199th Street. It has a natatorium. Laps are about as good for a restless head as anything I know.
  • State Senator Oscar Braynon II Park at Rolling Oaks, one of the city’s parks.
  • A.J. King Park at 4250 NW 178th Street and Bennett M. Lifter Park at 20775 NW 22nd Avenue.

Check programs, hours and fees on the city’s Parks & Recreation page. Things change. Call before you go.

Getting to practice without a car

Most men show up to sober living without a car. Some don’t have a license yet. That’s fine. You can still make every practice.

  • Miami Gardens Express. The city runs its own trolley with four color-coded routes, seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., per the city’s route page. Stops include City Hall, the North Dade Regional Library, Hard Rock Stadium and Florida Memorial University. Confirm the fare and times with the city.
  • Tri-Rail. The Golden Glades station sits just west of the Golden Glades Interchange, a short ride from the city’s southeast corner. It connects north into Broward and Palm Beach counties. Schedules at tri-rail.com.
  • Metrobus. County buses also serve Golden Glades and the main avenues. Plan routes with Miami-Dade Transit.

Early on, Foundry residents get rides to meetings and appointments. Men in good standing may have a car later. Earn it.

Meetings: your film sessions

You don’t get better by yourself. You get better in a room full of men who’ve done what you’re trying to do.

The Foundry is built on the twelve steps. Residents go to meetings, get a sponsor and do the work. Northern Miami-Dade and southern Broward have meetings morning, noon and night. Don’t trust a schedule on a blog, including ours. Use the official finders: AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search. Pick a home group. Show up early. Stack chairs. Talk to the old-timers.

Earn your spot: work

A paycheck is more than money in early recovery. It’s proof. Proof to your family, and proof to yourself.

Men around Miami Gardens find first jobs in warehouses and logistics near the highways, restaurants, retail, landscaping, maintenance and trades. The stadium and the universities bring event and service work. Start where you can start. Move up later.

CareerSource South Florida offers free job-search help. At The Foundry, we help with resumes and interview prep. Got a gap on your resume? Everybody in the house does. We’ll help you talk about it straight.

The other team: old haunts

Here’s the hard truth. If you grew up in Miami Gardens, you know where the trouble is. So does your phone.

That’s the case for a little distance. Not the other side of the country. Just enough that the old crew isn’t a ten-minute walk away. North Miami Beach and Hollywood are close enough to keep your job, your outpatient program and your family. They’re far enough that you have to decide on purpose to go back to the old block.

Delete the numbers you need to delete. Tell your house manager the names that are trouble. That’s not weakness. That’s defense.

Your bench: the family

Every man in the house has people in the stands. Parents, wives, kids, brothers. They’ve watched a lot of losses. They want this one to stick as bad as you do.

Families: a structured house helps you too. New residents have an initial blackout period before visits, so he can settle in. After that, visits get easier, and they mean more. Read our guide for families, and find your own support at Al-Anon. You don’t have to carry this alone either.

And if he slips? At The Foundry, a relapse leads to an honest conversation about the right level of care. Not shame. Not a lecture. A plan.

Where The Foundry fits

Let’s talk about the two houses. Both are FARR-certified men’s sober living homes.

Foundry: Lakehouse, 871 NE 182nd Terrace, North Miami Beach. Lakeside, eight bedrooms, five bathrooms. Canoes, kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit. Close to Aventura and I-95. For a man whose job or family is in Miami Gardens, this is usually the natural fit.

Foundry: Beachhouse, 701 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood. On the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach. Rooftop terrace, pool, ping pong, a billiards room with a waterway view, kayaks. Good for the man who wants more distance between himself and the old neighborhood.

Same playbook in both houses. Furnished rooms. Utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet included. Private pay, with scholarships for qualified men. We give rates on a call, and we don’t post bed availability because it changes. Most men stay three to twelve months.
