Walk a few blocks in Wynwood and you’ll pass more paint than most people see in a year: whole warehouse walls turned into faces, animals, patterns and words. A couple of miles north, in Little Haiti, the color comes from gingerbread trim, drums and a cultural center full of dance studios and gallery walls. If you’re looking at sober living near Wynwood or Little Haiti, this guide is about that creative energy, and how a man in early recovery can use it.
Here’s something I’ve seen again and again in years around recovery housing in South Florida: men who start making things tend to do better. It doesn’t matter whether it’s drawing, playing guitar, cooking, building furniture or writing. Making something gives restless hands a job and gives a busy mind somewhere to go. It’s not a replacement for meetings and a sponsor. It’s a very good companion to them.
A plain statement first: The Foundry has no house in Wynwood, Midtown, Little Haiti or the Upper East Side. Our men’s houses are in North Miami Beach (Foundry: Lakehouse) and Hollywood (Foundry: Beachhouse), both a reasonable drive away.
The canvas: four neighborhoods
Wynwood
Wynwood sits just north of downtown, bounded roughly by I-195 to the north, NW 20th Street to the south, I-95 to the west and the Florida East Coast Railway to the east. It started as a garment district in the 1920s; in the 1940s and 1950s, families from Puerto Rico gave it the nicknames Little San Juan and El Barrio. In 2009, developer Tony Goldman commissioned the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor street-art exhibition that turned the neighborhood into one of the best-known mural districts anywhere. The Bakehouse Art Complex and private collections like the Rubell and Margulies collections followed or grew alongside it.
Midtown
Midtown Miami was built from 2005 on a former Florida East Coast Railway rail yard along the edge of Wynwood and Edgewater. It’s a mix of apartment towers and shopping.
Little Haiti
Little Haiti runs from about NE/NW 54th Street north to the city line near 80th Street, with NE 2nd Avenue along its eastern side. It’s the heart of Haitian culture in Miami. The 13-foot bronze statue of Toussaint L’Ouverture stands at North Miami Avenue and 62nd Street.
The Upper East Side and MiMo
East of Little Haiti, along Biscayne Boulevard from roughly NE 50th to NE 77th Street, the MiMo/Biscayne Boulevard Historic District preserves “Miami Modern” buildings from the 1950s and 1960s. Behind it lie bayside neighborhoods such as Morningside, Bayside, Belle Meade, Shorecrest and Palm Grove.
Sober living near Wynwood and Little Haiti: making things as a recovery tool
Why does creativity help? A few honest reasons, from watching a lot of men go through early recovery:
- It fills the dangerous hours. Late afternoon and evening, when cravings and boredom hit hardest, are good hours to sketch, practice, cook or build.
- It slows the mind down. Focusing on a task with your hands quiets a lot of noise.
- It gives you something to show. Self-respect comes back in small pieces. A finished drawing or a song you can play start to finish is one of them.
- It connects you to people. Art and music are social. They’re a way to meet people who aren’t drinking around you.
- It’s a way to tell the truth. Plenty of men find it easier to write or draw what they’re feeling before they can say it out loud in a meeting.
A word of honesty, though. Creative scenes can also be party scenes. Wynwood has a lot of bars, breweries and late nights, and gallery openings often come with free drinks. That doesn’t make the neighborhood off limits. It means going in daylight, with sober friends, with a plan and an exit.
A creative itinerary for a sober man
See the walls in daylight
Walk Wynwood on a weekday morning, before the crowds. Bring a sketchbook or a phone camera and pick out work that moves you. Roberto Clemente Park is the neighborhood’s public park if you want somewhere to sit.
Spend an afternoon at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex
The City of Miami’s Little Haiti Cultural Complex, at 212-260 NE 59th Terrace, has an art gallery, dance studios, a proscenium theater, arts and crafts rooms and a courtyard. Next door, the Caribbean Marketplace at 5925 NE 2nd Avenue was designed by Charles Harrison Pawley in the style of Haitian gingerbread architecture. The city has hosted a free monthly music night there called Sounds of Little Haiti; check the complex’s events listings for what’s on now.
Read, write, and borrow
The Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Lemon City Branch at 430 NE 61st Street and Little River Branch at 160 NE 79th Street are quiet places to read, write, research jobs or borrow books on whatever craft you’re picking up.
Take a walk along MiMo
Architecture is art too. A walk past the mid-century buildings along Biscayne Boulevard is a free lesson in design.
Make something at home
The most important creative space is usually the house. A guitar in the living room, a shared kitchen where men cook for each other, a notebook by the bed. At our houses, a lot of men discover that cooking a meal for eight other guys is one of the most satisfying things they’ve done in years.
Wynwood ZIP codes (and Little Haiti’s)
All of these ZIPs carry the postal name “Miami, FL.” We checked them against Wikipedia’s Wynwood, Little Haiti and Little River articles and against USPS-based listings at unitedstateszipcodes.org and zip-codes.com. Wikipedia gives Wynwood’s ZIP as 33127 and lists four ZIPs for Little Haiti. We couldn’t confirm a single ZIP for Midtown from our sources, so check the specific address there.
| ZIP | Area it covers | Note for a man in recovery |

Getting around
The City of Miami runs free trolley routes for both Wynwood and Little Haiti, and Metrobus covers the main corridors. Metrorail’s Allapattah station, at NW 36th Street and NW 12th Avenue, is less than a mile west of Wynwood. A bike works well here too, as long as you stay alert in traffic.
Work: creative and otherwise
This part of Miami has jobs in galleries, studios, retail, restaurants, coffee shops, event production, sign painting, construction and the trades. For a man in early recovery, I’d steer away from bar and nightclub work for now, however good the tips are. CareerSource South Florida offers free job search help and training. At The Foundry, residents are expected to be working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program within the first couple of weeks, and we help with resumes and interviews.
What to look for in a men’s sober house
Creativity thrives on structure. So does recovery. Look for:
- FARR certification. Florida’s voluntary certification for recovery residences is set out in Florida Statute 397.487, administered by the Florida Association of Recovery Residences.
- Enforced rules: no alcohol or drugs, curfew, chores, required meetings. See sober living rules.
- Randomized drug testing, not a predictable schedule.
- Honest admissions. If a man needs treatment rather than sober living, a good house says so. FindTreatment.gov lists licensed treatment programs.
- A real brotherhood. Our post on brotherhood in men’s sober living explains why that matters.
Meetings
There are AA and NA meetings throughout this part of Miami. Find current listings with AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search. Plenty of artists and musicians sit in those rooms. You won’t be the only creative one there.
For families
If your son or partner is an artist or musician, you may worry that his creative world and his drinking or using world are tangled together. That’s a fair worry. A good sober house won’t ask him to give up his art; it will help him practice it sober. Ask the house how they handle schedules, curfew and work. At The Foundry there’s an initial blackout period before visits for new residents. Al-Anon supports families, and our families page has more.
The Foundry: room to create, close by
Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach, near Aventura and I-95: a lakeside house with eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes, kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit. From Wynwood it’s roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, depending on traffic, and a bit less from Little Haiti.

Foundry: Beachhouse is at 701 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood, on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach, with a rooftop terrace, a pool, ping pong and a billiards room looking out on the water. It’s roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Wynwood.

Both houses are FARR-certified and men-only, run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship, and built around the 12 steps. Rules: no alcohol or drugs, randomized testing, curfew, meetings, chores, and work, school, volunteering or an outpatient program. Rooms are furnished, and utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet are included. Early on we provide rides to meetings and appointments. Most men stay three to twelve months. The Foundry is a recovery residence, not treatment or detox. It’s private pay, with scholarships for qualified men, and we discuss rates on a call.
