Sober Living in South Miami: What I’d Tell You Over a Cup of Coffee

South Miami, FLJune 20269 min readBy Richard RibacoffHeader photo: Nadi Spasibenko / Unsplash

Pull up a chair. You look like a man who has been reading about sober living in South Miami at 2 a.m., which, for the record, is how most of us start. Coffee’s on me. It’s the one thing in recovery that’s always free at a meeting and never runs out, and we’re going to need it, because I’m going to be straight with you.

I’m Richard. I’ve spent years around recovery housing in South Florida, and I’ve had some version of this conversation more times than I can count. So here’s what I’d tell my own little brother if he were sitting across from me on Sunset Drive, trying to figure out where to live after treatment.

First thing, so you don’t feel misled later: The Foundry doesn’t have a house in South Miami. We’ve got two, one in North Miami Beach and one in Hollywood. I’ll tell you where they are, and you can decide if the drive is a problem or a gift. Sometimes it’s a gift.

South Miami, the short version

South Miami is a small city, about 2.3 square miles with 12,026 people in the 2020 census. Locals call it SoMi, and its official motto is “The City of Pleasant Living,” which is the kind of motto you can only pull off if you mean it. It was settled in 1897, got a Florida East Coast Railway depot in 1904, and incorporated in 1927. Coral Gables is on the east, Pinecrest on the south, and the University of Miami campus sits right along its eastern edge at Red Road.

The heart of town is Sunset Drive, also known as SW 72nd Street. City Hall is on it, the library is on it, and the Metrorail station is where it meets U.S. 1. There’s a walkable downtown with restaurants and shops, The Shops at Sunset Place, and a lot of quiet residential streets lined with big trees. Pleasant. Like the motto says.

Now the honest part: South Miami is also next door to a big university. College towns have college nightlife. That doesn’t make it a bad place for recovery, but if your old life involved bars full of 22-year-olds, you already know which blocks to skip.

What sober living actually is (and isn’t)

Here’s the speech, and I’ll keep it short. A sober house is a place to live. That’s it. It’s not rehab, not detox, not therapy. It’s a house with rules, other men who are trying to stay sober, and enough structure that you don’t drift. If you still need detox or treatment, a decent house will tell you so before you move in, and you should listen. If you want the longer version, read what sober living is.

A lot of guys do sober living and an outpatient program at the same time. That’s a smart combination. You get clinical care during the day and a safe place to sleep at night.

How to tell a good house from a bad one

I’m going to give you five things. If a house fails any of them, keep shopping.

1. It’s certified, and you checked

Florida’s certification for recovery residences is voluntary. It’s laid out in section 397.487 of the state statutes, and the group that does the certifying is the Florida Association of Recovery Residences, or FARR. Plenty of houses skip it. Don’t take anyone’s word for it; look it up. Both of ours are certified.

2. The rules are real

No drinking, no drugs, random drug tests, a curfew, chores, meetings, and something to do with your day. If a house says “we’re pretty relaxed,” that’s not the selling point they think it is. Ask what happened the last time somebody broke a rule. Here’s our rundown on sober living rules.

3. Somebody’s actually in charge

Who do you call at 2 a.m.? If the answer is a voicemail, that’s your answer. At The Foundry, the houses are run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship.

4. They’re straight about money

You should get a clear rate on the phone, and a clear list of what it covers. Be careful with anyone who wants your insurance card before they’ll talk. We’re private pay, with scholarships for qualified men, and we’ll give you a number when you call. We include furnished rooms, utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet. Our guide to sober living costs in Miami explains how to compare apples to apples.

5. They’ll be honest when you mess up

If you relapse, what happens? A good house protects the other guys and also helps you figure out what level of care you need next. At The Foundry, a relapse means an honest conversation about exactly that.

Why men-only, since you’re wondering

You’d be amazed how much more honest guys get when there’s nobody to impress. That’s most of it. Both Foundry houses are men’s sober living, and if you want the long version, read our post on the men’s sober house.

Getting around South Miami without a car

Good news: South Miami is one of the easier places in the county to live without a car. The South Miami Metrorail station sits at U.S. 1 and Sunset Drive and has been there since 1984. One direction takes you south to Dadeland; the other takes you north through Coral Gables, Brickell and downtown. Metrobus routes stop at the station too. Plan trips with Miami-Dade Transit.

There’s also the Underline, a 10-mile linear park being built under the Metrorail tracks from Brickell down to Dadeland South. The northern sections in Brickell are open, and the long stretch through this part of the county is scheduled for completion in 2026. When it’s done, it’s a walking and biking path right through town. Until then, a bike and a lock go a long way on SoMi’s flat streets.

What to do with your free time (because you’ll have too much of it)

Early recovery is full of empty hours. Empty hours are where bad ideas live. Fill them.

  • The parks. For a city this small, South Miami has a lot of them: Dante Fascell Park, Palmer Park, Fuchs Park, Murray Park and more. The city keeps a list on its parks and facilities page.
  • The South Miami Branch Library at 6000 Sunset Drive. Free Wi-Fi, free computers, free air conditioning. Write a resume, read a book, sit somewhere quiet and not think about drinking for an afternoon.
  • A walk down Sunset Drive. Get a coffee, look at the old buildings. The Riviera Theatre at 5700 South Dixie Highway goes back to 1925, and the Cambridge Lawns Historic District is a block of homes finished in 1928.
  • The gym, the court, the track. Anything that leaves you tired in a good way.

Meetings: go to more than you think you need

Seriously. Ninety in ninety is a cliche because it works for a lot of people. Between South Miami, Coral Gables and Kendall, you’ll find meetings all day long. I’m not going to list times, because they change and I don’t want to send you to an empty room. Use AA’s meeting finder or NA’s meeting search. Find a home group, get a sponsor, and actually call him. The Foundry is built around the twelve steps, so this isn’t optional with us.

Work: get a job, any job

Not a career. A job. Something that gets you up, gets you out and gets you paid. Around here, that might be restaurants and shops downtown, retail at the bigger centers, or work tied to the university next door. CareerSource South Florida has free job-search help. At The Foundry, you’re expected to be working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program within your first couple of weeks, and we’ll help you with the resume and the interview. If school makes more sense than a job right now, that counts too.

South Miami ZIP codes

Quick lesson in post office logic: the South Miami ZIP code you’re looking for actually says “Miami” on the envelope. Wikipedia lists two ZIP codes for the city, 33143 and 33155, and both carry the postal name Miami. ZIP-code directories confirm both cover the city, and both reach well beyond it: 33143 also takes in parts of Coral Gables, and 33155 extends well outside the city too. So a 33143 address isn’t necessarily inside city limits.

Sober living South Miami FL guys can actually reach: our two houses

Here’s the real talk on The Foundry.

Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach, near Aventura and I-95. It’s on a lake. Eight bedrooms, five bathrooms, canoes, kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit, which is where the good late-night conversations happen. From South Miami it’s roughly 35 to 50 minutes by car, depending on what I-95 is in the mood for.

Foundry: Beachhouse is at 701 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood, right on the Intracoastal Waterway and minutes from Hollywood Beach. Rooftop terrace, pool, ping pong, a billiards room that looks out over the water, and kayaks. From South Miami, figure roughly 40 minutes to an hour.

Same rules at both: no alcohol or drugs, random testing, curfew, meetings, chores, and something productive with your day. Early on, we give you rides to meetings and appointments. Later, if you’re in good standing, you can have a car. Most guys stay somewhere between three and twelve months. We don’t post bed availability online because it changes all the time, so just call.

Is 40 minutes too far? Maybe. But here’s what I’ve noticed: a lot of men do better when the old crowd is a drive away instead of a walk away. Your call.

If you’re family, this part’s for you

If your son, brother or husband sent you this link, thanks for reading this far. Two things. First, new residents have an initial blackout period before visits. It’s not a punishment; it’s a running start. Second, you need support too. Al-Anon is for exactly that, and our families page walks through the rest.
