Sober Living and Coconut Grove: Cafes, Culture and a Sober Social Life for Men

Coconut Grove, FLJuly 202610 min readBy Richard RibacoffHeader photo: Adrian Diaz-Sieckel / Unsplash

The first Friday night after treatment is a strange one. You’re clean, you feel better than you have in months, and you have no idea what to do with yourself after dark. For a lot of men from Miami, the old answer to “what are we doing tonight?” involved a bar tab. If you’re thinking about sober living in Coconut Grove, or near it, this guide is about building a better answer: coffee instead of cocktails, a bayfront walk instead of last call, a table full of sober friends instead of a crowded room you don’t remember leaving.

I’m Richard. I’ve spent years around men’s recovery housing in South Florida, and I’ve watched a lot of men figure out, slowly, that a sober life can still have flavor. The Grove is a good place to learn that, because so much of what makes it worth visiting has nothing to do with drinking.

Before anything else, a straight answer: The Foundry does not have a house in Coconut Grove. Our two men’s houses are north of here, the Lakehouse in North Miami Beach and the Beachhouse in Hollywood. I’ll explain later how they fit for a man from the Grove.

The Grove, briefly

Coconut Grove is one of the oldest settled areas in Miami. Wikipedia dates its settlement to 1825, when the Cape Florida lighthouse began operating, and the City of Miami annexed the former city of Coconut Grove in 1925. Today it’s a neighborhood of Miami, not a separate town, covering roughly five and a half square miles along Biscayne Bay. Wikipedia lists its subdistricts as the Center Grove, Northeast Coconut Grove, Southwest Coconut Grove and the historic West Grove, long known as the Black Grove. The Village Center, around Main Highway, McFarlane Road and Grand Avenue, is where most of the cafes and shops are.

What you notice first is the shade. The Grove has a canopy most of Miami lost a long time ago, and the streets feel slower under it. Then you notice the bay, which is never far away.

Why food and culture matter in early recovery

This isn’t a fluffy point. Boredom and isolation are two of the most common reasons I’ve seen men in early recovery drift back toward old habits. A man who has a reason to be somewhere on Saturday morning, and people to meet there, has a lot more protection than a man sitting alone in his room scrolling his phone.

Shared meals are part of what makes a recovery house work. Coffee after a meeting is half the meeting for a lot of guys. Finding a new favorite breakfast spot, cooking a big dinner on Sunday, learning that a museum visit or an outdoor concert is actually fun sober: these are small things, and they add up to a life you don’t want to throw away.

So when I look at a neighborhood like Coconut Grove, I’m not asking where the bars are. I’m asking where a sober man can spend an evening and enjoy it.

Sober living in Coconut Grove: a sober night out

Here’s how I’d think about a good night in the Grove without a drink in it.

Start with coffee, not happy hour

The Center Grove, around CocoWalk and the streets near Main Highway and Grand Avenue, is full of cafes, bakeries and casual places to eat. Make the cafe your meeting place. Coffee after a meeting, or before a walk, gives a group of sober men a reason to linger and talk without anyone ordering a round. Pick a place, make it a habit, and let it become the spot where people know to find you.

Walk to the water

Peacock Park, at 2820 McFarlane Road, is a 9.4-acre waterfront park on Biscayne Bay right off the Center Grove. The City of Miami notes that the site once held the first hotel on mainland Florida south of Palm Beach, and the city has been working on a shoreline and kayak launch project there. After dinner, it’s the obvious place to sit by the bay and talk.

Further up South Bayshore Drive, David T. Kennedy Park at 2200 S. Bayshore Drive has more than 20 acres of bayfront green space, running paths and a free outdoor exercise course with calisthenics stations. It’s a good morning spot as well as an evening one.

Find the cultural calendar

The Barnacle Historic State Park at 3485 Main Highway protects the house pioneer Ralph Middleton Munroe completed in 1891. Florida State Parks calls it the oldest house in Miami-Dade County still standing in its original location. The park lists events such as an outdoor concert series and Shakespeare in the Park, which make an easy sober evening: bring a folding chair and some friends. Nearby, Vizcaya, the bayfront estate built in 1916, is one of the city’s best-known sights and a calm way to spend an afternoon.

End with dessert

This sounds silly until you try it. A lot of men in early recovery develop a sweet tooth, and an ice cream or a pastry on the walk home is a perfectly good ritual to replace the last drink of the night. I’ll take it.

An honest note on Grove nightlife

The Grove has bars and restaurants that pour drinks, especially in the Center Grove, and weekend nights can get lively. That doesn’t make it off limits, but it does mean a man in early recovery should go in with a plan: go with sober friends, know why you’re there, and know when you’re leaving. If a particular block or restaurant was part of your using life, skip it for now. There will be time later.

That’s also an honest argument for living somewhere a little removed from the places you used to drink, at least for the first few months, and coming back to the Grove on your own terms.

Coconut Grove ZIP codes

Coconut Grove is mostly one ZIP code, which makes it easier than many Miami neighborhoods. Wikipedia’s article on the neighborhood says its boundaries roughly match the 33133 ZIP code, and that a small part of the Grove falls in 33129. Both carry a “Miami, FL” postal name; USPS-based ZIP references list “Coconut Grove” and “Coral Gables” as acceptable mailing names for 33133. Like most ZIPs, they don’t follow neighborhood lines exactly.

33133Most of Coconut Grove, including the Center Grove, Southwest Grove and West Grove, plus parts of Coral Way and Coral GablesBayfront parks, the Barnacle, the Coconut Grove library and the Coconut Grove Metrorail station are all here. Also home to the Grove’s busiest dining and nightlife blocks.
33129A small part of the Grove; the rest of this ZIP extends north toward BrickellCloser to the jobs and transit of Brickell and downtown. Confirm which ZIP an address falls in before assuming it’s “in the Grove.”

If you’re searching for sober living Coconut Grove FL options by ZIP, remember that a 33133 address can sit in a very different setting depending on which side of US 1 it’s on. Visit before you decide.

Getting around without a car

Most men arriving at a sober house don’t have a car right away, so transit matters. The Coconut Grove Metrorail station, at US 1 and SW 27th Avenue on the western edge of the Grove, serves the Green and Orange lines, with Douglas Road one stop south and Vizcaya one stop north. That puts downtown, Brickell, the Civic Center medical district and the airport within reach. Miami-Dade Transit runs Metrorail and Metrobus, and the City of Miami runs a Coconut Grove trolley route.

For quiet time, the Coconut Grove Branch Library at 2875 McFarlane Road (its 1963 building is a designated Florida Heritage Site) and the Virrick Park branch at 3255 Plaza Street in the West Grove are both part of the Miami-Dade Public Library System.

Work: the Grove runs on hospitality

Restaurants, cafes, retail around CocoWalk, the marinas at Dinner Key, landscaping and building trades, and the offices around the Grove and Brickell all hire. For a man in recovery, hospitality work can be fine, but be honest with yourself about whether a job behind a bar or late shifts around alcohol is a good idea in the first months. Kitchen, cafe, retail and outdoor jobs are often easier places to start.

CareerSource South Florida runs free job centers and training programs in Miami-Dade. At The Foundry, residents are expected to be working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program within the first couple of weeks, and we help with resumes and interview prep.

What to look for in a men’s sober house

Good coffee and a nice park won’t keep anyone sober on their own. The house matters more than the neighborhood. Here’s my short list for any men’s sober living home, near the Grove or anywhere else.

Meetings, and the coffee after

Miami has a deep schedule of AA and NA meetings, including in and around the Grove. Use the official finders rather than old lists: AA’s meeting finder and NA’s meeting search. Our guide to AA and NA meetings in Miami covers how to choose a home group. And yes, go to coffee afterward when someone asks. That’s where a lot of the real recovery happens.

For families

If you’re a parent, partner or sibling reading this, a few thoughts. Ask the house what a typical day looks like. Ask how they handle a relapse. Ask how and when visits work; at The Foundry, new residents have an initial blackout period before visits. And take care of yourself too: Al-Anon exists for exactly this. Our families page has more.

Where The Foundry fits for a man from the Grove

Neither of our houses is in Coconut Grove, and I won’t pretend otherwise. But plenty of men from the Grove, and from neighboring areas like Coral Gables, Brickell and downtown and Key Biscayne, choose a house a bit further from their old routine.

Foundry: Lakehouse is at 871 NE 182nd Terrace in North Miami Beach, near Aventura and I-95. It’s a lakeside home with eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes, kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit, which is where a lot of the evening conversation happens. From the Grove it’s roughly 35 to 50 minutes by car depending on traffic.

Foundry: Beachhouse is at 701 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood, on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach, with a rooftop terrace, a pool, ping pong and a billiards room with a view of the water. It’s further, usually 40 minutes to an hour from the Grove.

Both houses are FARR-certified and men-only, run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship, and built around the 12 steps. Rooms are furnished, and utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet are included. We give early residents rides to meetings and appointments. Most men stay three to twelve months. The Foundry is a recovery residence, not treatment or detox, and if a man relapses, it leads to an honest conversation about the right level of care.
