Sober Living in 33161: A Men’s Guide to North Miami, Miami Shores and Biscayne Park

Type “sober living homes Miami” into a search bar from a kitchen table in North Miami and you’ll get houses in Kendall, Hialeah, Miami Beach and Broward, all mixed together. If you live in 33161, or your son or brother does, that list isn’t much help. Distance matters a lot in the first months of recovery, and so do the details of the house. This guide sticks to the ZIP code itself: what 33161 covers, what a week there looks like for a man in recovery, what to check in any house you tour, and where The Foundry’s two houses sit from here.

A quick note on where we stand. The Foundry runs two FARR-certified men’s sober living houses, and neither one is inside 33161. Foundry: Lakehouse is next door in North Miami Beach, in the 33162 ZIP, roughly 10 to 25 minutes from most of 33161 depending on where you start and the traffic. Foundry: Beachhouse is in Hollywood, a little farther north. I’ll say plainly where each one fits.

What 33161 actually covers

33161 is a mailing ZIP, not a city, and it crosses several lines on the map. It takes in a large part of North Miami, all of the Village of Biscayne Park, part of the Village of Miami Shores, and a slice of unincorporated Golden Glades on its western side. Its neighbors are 33138, 33150, 33162, 33168, 33169 and 33181.

Place in 33161What it isWhy it matters to a man in recovery
North MiamiA city of about 60,000 people (2020 census), with NE 125th Street as its downtown spineMost of the jobs, buses, meetings and errands in the ZIP are here. The city’s free NoMi Express trolley runs weekdays.
Biscayne ParkA small village of about 3,100 people (2020 census), entirely inside 33161Quiet, residential streets that are good for walking. Very little commercial activity, so plan errands elsewhere.
Miami ShoresA village of about 11,600 people (2020 census) that spreads across several ZIPs, including 33161Barry University’s main campus is here, which means campus and service jobs. Its own police department and a mostly residential feel.
Golden GladesUnincorporated Miami-Dade on the western edgeClose to major highways, which is useful for getting to work and less useful for walking.

The roads you’ll use most are Biscayne Boulevard, NE 125th Street, NE 135th Street and NE 2nd Avenue. For a wider view of the county, our Miami-Dade ZIP code guide goes area by area.

Why the ZIP code matters less than you think

Here’s the honest part. A house’s ZIP tells you how long the drive is. It doesn’t tell you whether the house is any good. Two sober living homes three blocks apart can be completely different places to live: one with real rules, a house manager who notices things and a full house of men working a program; the other a rented room with a “sober” sign and nobody checking.

So use 33161 as a starting point for your search, not the deciding factor. A man is usually better off in a strong house 20 minutes away than in a weak one around the corner. If you’re torn between living close to home and moving a few miles out, I wrote a separate piece on that question: should a man from 33161 stay close to home?

What a week in 33161 looks like in early recovery

Early recovery is mostly about structure, and 33161 has the pieces you need to build it.

Meetings. There are 12-step meetings across North Miami and Miami Shores most days of the week, morning and evening. Use AA’s meeting finder to see what’s near you, and pick a home group early. At The Foundry, men get rides to meetings and appointments in the first weeks, and residents in good standing may have a car later.

Work. First jobs around here often come from restaurants and retail along Biscayne Boulevard, campus and service work near Barry University, maintenance, landscaping and the trades. CareerSource South Florida offers free job-search help. At The Foundry, every resident is working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program (IOP counts) within his first couple of weeks, and we help with resumes and interviews.

Getting around. On weekdays the city’s NoMi Express trolley is free. On weekends you’ll be on county buses, a bike, your feet or a house ride, so plan ahead.

Quiet time. The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami sits on NE 125th Street, and the residential streets of Biscayne Park and Miami Shores are good for a long evening walk. A man in early recovery needs places to go that have nothing to do with drinking. For more ideas, see sober things to do in Miami Shores.

What to check in any sober living home near 33161

Whether you end up with us or somewhere else, check these five things before you sign anything:

  • Certification. In Florida, certifying a recovery residence is still voluntary. It’s done under section 397.487 of the Florida Statutes through the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR). Ask to see the certificate, then look the house up on FARR’s site yourself.
  • Rules that are actually enforced. No alcohol or drugs, randomized drug testing, a curfew, chores and required meetings, with clear consequences. Ask what happened the last time someone broke a rule.
  • Who’s in charge. Find out who runs the house day to day and whether they’re on site. Foundry houses are run by men in recovery who are active in the fellowship.
  • What’s included. Ask for the full weekly or monthly cost and what it covers. Furnishings, utilities, linens, laundry and internet shouldn’t be surprise extras.
  • Honest admissions. Sober living is housing, not treatment or detox. A good house will tell you if you need a higher level of care first.

If you want a longer list to take on a tour, our touring checklist covers what to look at room by room.

The Foundry’s houses, from 33161

Foundry: Lakehouse, 871 NE 182nd Terrace, North Miami Beach: lakeside, eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, canoes and kayaks, a hammock, a tree swing and a fire pit, near Aventura and I-95. It’s in 33162, the ZIP just north of 33161. For a man whose job, IOP, sponsor or family is in North Miami, Miami Shores or Biscayne Park, it’s close enough to keep those things and far enough to feel like a fresh start.

Foundry: Beachhouse, 701 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood: on the Intracoastal Waterway minutes from Hollywood Beach, with a rooftop terrace, pool, ping pong, kayaks and a billiards room looking out on the water. It’s the better fit for a man who wants more distance from his old routine.

Both are men-only. Rooms are furnished, and utilities, linens, laundry and high-speed internet are included. Sober living is private pay, with scholarships for qualified men; we share rates on a call. Most men stay three to twelve months.
