There’s an old line in the rooms: you keep what you have by giving it away. Service is one of the most reliable tools a man in early recovery has. It fills empty afternoons, gets him out of his own head, and puts him around people who are doing something good. If you’re in or near Miami’s 33161 ZIP, there are real places to volunteer within a short ride: a food bank, an animal shelter, a state park, a home-building crew, a shelter for people without homes. This guide covers where to start and how to make service part of a sober week.
A quick note on where we stand. The Foundry runs two FARR-certified men’s sober living houses: Foundry: Lakehouse in North Miami Beach, next door to 33161, and Foundry: Beachhouse in Hollywood. Every resident is working, in school, volunteering or in an outpatient program within his first couple of weeks, and volunteering counts. For some men it’s the bridge to a first job.
Why service helps in early recovery
- It fills the dangerous hours. Late afternoons and weekends are when a lot of men struggle. A three-hour shift at a food bank on a Saturday changes the whole day.
- It builds a work record. Showing up on time, following directions and finishing a shift are exactly what employers want to see. A volunteer coordinator can also be a reference.
- It gets you out of yourself. Early recovery can be very self-focused. Helping someone else is a break from that.
- It’s sober by design. Nobody is drinking at the food bank warehouse at 9 a.m.
Start in the rooms
The easiest service is the closest. Every meeting needs someone to set up chairs, make coffee, greet newcomers and clean up. Ask the secretary of your home group what needs doing. It costs nothing, it starts this week, and it ties you to a group of men who will notice if you stop showing up. Use AA’s meeting finder or our guide to AA and NA meetings in Miami to find a group near you.

If you have court-ordered community service
Some men come into sober living with community service hours to complete. Not every organization accepts court-ordered hours, so ask before you sign up. Feeding South Florida, for example, has a separate application for court-ordered service on its website and asks you to allow several days for approval. Keep your own log of dates, hours and the supervisor’s name for every shift, and get each one signed if your court requires it.
How to make service a habit
- Pick one regular slot. Same day, same time, every week. A standing Saturday-morning shift does more than five scattered ones.
- Go with someone. Bring a housemate or a man from your home group. It’s more fun and harder to skip.
- Don’t overdo it. Service should support your recovery, not replace meetings, work or rest.
- Notice how you feel after. Most men come home from a shift calmer than when they left. Pay attention to that.
