Is North Miami Safe? What the Numbers Say, for Men in Recovery and Their Families

When a family is looking at sober living for a son or brother, one of the first questions is simple: is the area safe? People search “is North Miami safe” every month, and most of the answers they find are ranking sites with no clear source. This guide does it differently. It starts with the North Miami Police Department’s own published numbers, explains what they do and don’t tell you, and then looks at the kind of safety that matters most in early recovery.

A quick note on where we stand. The Foundry runs two FARR-certified men’s sober living houses, and neither one is inside North Miami. Foundry: Lakehouse is next door in North Miami Beach. Foundry: Beachhouse is in Hollywood. Many of our residents work, attend meetings or have family in North Miami and the 33161 ZIP, so we get this question often.

What the official numbers say

North Miami has its own police department, headquartered at 700 NE 124th Street, inside 33161. Its 2024 annual report compares 2024 with 2023:

Category20232024Change
All Part 1 index crimes2,4422,123Down 13%
Homicide40Down 100%
Robbery102101Down 1%
Aggravated assault251116Down 54%
Burglary173163Down 6%
Vehicle burglary522540Up 3%
Theft633567Down 10%
Motor vehicle theft319257Down 19%

The department reports a 41% drop in violent crime over the same period. In plain terms, most categories went down from 2023 to 2024, and the most serious ones fell the most.

What the numbers don’t tell you

  • They’re for the city, not the ZIP. These figures cover the City of North Miami. 33161 also includes Biscayne Park, part of Miami Shores and part of unincorporated Golden Glades, which are policed separately.
  • They’re for the whole city. Conditions vary block by block. A quiet residential street and a busy commercial corner a mile away can be very different.
  • Most of it is property crime. Theft, shoplifting and car break-ins make up the bulk of the total. That shapes what “being careful” looks like.
  • One year is one year. A single year’s change can bounce around. Look at the trend over several years if you can.

The practical takeaway from the table: vehicle burglary was the one major category that went up. Lock the car, and don’t leave a phone, bag or laptop in sight.

The safety that matters most in early recovery

For a man in his first months sober, the biggest risks usually aren’t on the crime report. They’re these:

  • Old people and old places. If North Miami is where he used, the real danger may be the friend two blocks away or the bar on the way home. Safety can mean living a few miles from his old life. Our post on staying close to home or moving a few miles out covers that question.
  • Empty time. Unstructured afternoons and weekends are where relapse often starts. A job, meetings and a house schedule are safety measures.
  • Being alone. A man who lives alone and stops answering his phone is at more risk than a man in a full house where someone notices.
  • Overdose. Tolerance drops fast after treatment. Families should know the signs of an overdose, keep naloxone (Narcan) on hand, and call 911 right away if they suspect one.

Everyday common sense around 33161

  • Walk to evening meetings with someone from the house when you can, and stick to lit, busy streets.
  • Keep your phone charged and your sponsor’s number in your favorites.
  • Learn your routes in daylight first.
  • On a bike, use lights after dark. Biscayne Boulevard is a busy road.
  • If something feels off, leave. You don’t need a reason.

Storms and heat

South Florida has its own kind of safety planning. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Miami-Dade County publishes storm surge planning zones you can look up by address. A good sober house has a storm plan and tells residents what it is. The summer heat is also real: drink water, and don’t plan a midday walk in August.

Questions families ask us

Is it safe for him to take the bus or bike to work?

For most men, yes, with ordinary care: daylight routes when possible, lights on the bike, phone charged. In the early weeks at The Foundry, men get rides to work, meetings and appointments, which takes a lot of the worry out of it.

What if his old crowd lives nearby?

That’s worth taking seriously. If his old life is centered in 33161, a house a few miles away, like the Lakehouse just north of it or the Beachhouse in Hollywood, may be the safer choice.

How will we know if something is wrong?

In a well-run house, you won’t be the only one watching. Ask any house how it handles missed curfews, a failed drug test or a resident who goes quiet, and who would contact you. Our family guide covers this in more detail.

So, is North Miami safe?

By its own police department’s numbers, North Miami saw fewer crimes in 2024 than in 2023, with large drops in the most serious categories. Like any city, it has busier and quieter areas, and property crime is the main thing to guard against. For a man in early recovery, the bigger question is usually not the neighborhood but the house: who he lives with, what the rules are, and whether someone notices when he’s struggling.
